Passion Pit – Carried Away Lyrics 12 years ago
This seems to be a song about people who are acquaintances or distant friends who have strong differences of opinion and yet are trying to remain civi with one another in spite of this. Verse one refers to a distant friend. Perhaps they know the same people, see each other at the same gatherings, etc. The songwriter refers to them as a "friend". The writer of the song appears to see the friend as someone of greater means or a higher class status since the songwriter downplays his money as being in copper (pennies) and not being as proper.

Verse 2 seems to refer to someone else. Someone they just met, a foreigner from Europe. They may be very opinionated, proud, and judgemental even at first meeting. The songwriter doesn't want to get to know them any further but still wants to get along even if just for their short time together until they can go their separate ways.

The conflict is that the songwriter gets "carried away" sometimes and says things out loud that can stir others up even more. They hace a tendency to make a bad situation worse and they are conscious enough of this to try and avoid it if they can.

I still think it's "a lie" and not "aloud".

Billy Squier – In The Dark Lyrics 15 years ago
This song seems to be about a lover who keeps their relationship a secret. They are taking a "risk" by being involved in a "habit that's hard to break". I'm going to theorize that the relationship probably involves both sex and drugs.

They seem to fear an unpleasant scene more than they do a life of loneliness as their life is "singular". However, when "down in the hole" (possibly the "rabbit hole", a reference to "Alice in Wonderland" and thus a drug reference) they have a hard time suppressing those things within themselves that they try to keep hidden from others, like their loneliness and lust. The altered state is causing them to lose a little control and become less inhibited. The possible drug reference is further reinforced by the suggestion of hallucination "You're never sure if the illusion is real, You pinch yourself".

If my theory about the drug reference has any validity to it, then it seems that the subject, being such a guarded person, would probably want to avoid others knowing about what they're doing and WHO they are doing it with. They would be embarrassed to be associated with them publicly. Meanwhile, the artist seems to point out constant facade the subject puts on around others with the lines "You take no interest, no opinion's too dear, You make the rounds and you try to be so sincere."

The artist asks the subject do they need someone they can trust ("who would tell you no lies"), can they stop making up excuses why they can't ("alibis"), "Will you love me in the dark?".

The line "will you face the fire when you see me there, will you feel the fire" seems to be more of a reference to passion/lust than it is to pain/persecution. So I think the artist is asking the subject if they will succumb to their desires if no one will know but them.

Imperial Drag – Boy or a Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
Awesome Song!!! Why didn't more people appreciate this band?

I'm pretty sure this is about people who experiment with cross-dressing but aren't necessarily renouncing their otherwise heterosexual lifestyles. In my lifetime, I've noticed a fair amount of people who get a kick out of dressing in drag but are completely straight otherwise. A famous example would be Ed Wood, the infamous B-movie director. It could also be about the glam-rocker style of dress since it is deliberately effeminate. Considering these guys were essentially glam, that makes sense too.

Prince – Erotic City Lyrics 16 years ago
I was with my wife and two children both under five years of age at the outdoor pool enjoying myself when one of my favorite songs came on. There was one problem though, as much as I love Prince, the song "Erotic City" has no place blasting over the loud speakers while youngsters play at the recreational pool. If I was hanging with friends at a club somewhere you wouldn't hear me complaining, but come on really? Who thought this was appropriate for children to hear?

Oh and the lyrics above are all wrong. He says:

If we cannot make babies
Maybe we can make some time
Fuck so pretty, U and me
Erotic City come alive
We could fuck until the dawn
Makin' love 'til cherry's gone
Erotic City, can't U see?
Fuck so pretty, U and me

Weezer – Troublemaker Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems like a bit of a character portrayal so to criticize the lyrical content for being too simple would mean that you're kind of misunderstanding the "voice" of the character narrating the song.

For example, considering that Rivers Cuomo went to Harvard, I think it's safe to assume that he actually doesn't think that books are stupid.

So this character who is narrating is a dreamer with high aspirations of fame and fortune, sees himself as a rebel and one-in-a-million "special guy", who considers himself to be above the need for education, family life, popular culture, sports, and also meaningful relationships. He's basically an anti-social douche who thinks he's better than everybody and his fantasy is that one day he will prove this to the world and people will look to him as an idol, but he's "such a mystery" that people will try to study him and not figure him out.

Honestly? I think showbiz is a gathering place for nitwits like this song describes and Rivers has probably run into tons of them. He might even consider himself to be one to some extent given his own course in life, especially when he was younger and still in high school. So he could be reflecting on his earlier years as a young dreamer, or just painting a cynical portrait of a certain type of person he's met in showbiz.

Or maybe he's just making it all up for the sake of telling a story. Who can say? But it's a good song, and I enjoy it for the story it tells.
