I think the narrorator is in love with a person who takes advantage of their relationship. I think she's the person's booty call, and she's sick of it. I thought the part "scared of the feeling of you coming home" refered to her knowing she'd give into the person, but not wanting to. She wants to break away, but doesn't know how. That was just my interpretation, anyway. I think its pretty obvious the song is about some form of abuse though. It might be physical, but my thoughts were that it was more about abuse of the relationship they had. |

| Bright Eyes – Take It Easy (Love Nothing) Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I think the narrorator is a boy who has sex with an older woman. "First with your hands, then with your mouth A downpour of sweat, damp cotton clouds I was a fool, you were my friend We made it happen You took off your clothes, left on the light You stood there so brave, you used to be shy Each feature improved, each movement refined And eyes like a showroom" At first, he doesn't see any of the negative reprocussions that people sometimes associate with the afterglow of sex. He feels everything's just fine. "Now they're spreading out the blankets on the beach That weatherman's a liar, he said it'd be raining But it's clear and blue as far as I can see" Then the woman bails. She obviously didn't feel for him what he felt for her. She was probably burned in the past, and feels can't love anyone anymore. She was just using him and he was expendable to her. "Left by the lamp, right next to the bed On a cartoon cat pad, she scrached with a pen: "Everything as it's always been, this never happened Don't take it too bad, it's nothing you did Just once something dies, you can't make it live You're a beautiful boy, you're a sweet little kid But I am a woman" He's devastated. Now he, having shared her experience, has inherited the same attitude as the woman he slept with. He refuses to give himself up to anyone in an emotional sense. "So I laid back down, wrapped myself up in the sheets And I must have looked like a ghost Because something frightened me And since then I've been so good at vanishing" He goes on about the same way as the woman did. He recognizes that he should probably feel bad about it, but also feels gratification in not having any emotional attachment. At the same time, its an empty feeling. "Now I do as I please, and I lie through my teeth Someone might get hurt, but it won't be me Should probably feel cheap, but I just feel free And a little bit empty No, it isn't so hard to get close to me There'll be no arguments, we'll always agree And I'll try to be kind when I ask you to leave We'll both take it easy" He's persistent on not letting anyone in. This last line is refering to the woman who he put in the song and saying he'll do the same to anyone else if he gets to feeling too attached to them. "If you stay to long inside my memory I will trap you in a song tied to a melody And I'll keep you there so that you can't bother me" |
