The song begins with strange sounds, they create an otherworldly, mysterious, almost frightening feel to the song. I believe the song has to do with death. "The end" is a pretty clear reference to death, "broken end" suggests a painful ending--as cuttingedge said, perhaps suicidal. Laying down "at the feet of angels" is probably the strongest clue to the death interpretation, though. "Where time suspends" gives a timeless aspect to it, suggesting eternity/afterlife. Hearing voices--might be a reference to the voices of angels or other supernatural beings--which is made clearer with the following line, "calling you from a northern sky." What else would call to you from the sky? Sky implies heaven--being called to the sky implies being called from this world to the next--essentially, death. The chorus is reassuring--as though from someone who there for guidance, whether a departed loved one or an angel is not clear. "Don't look down" clearly means they're going up--towards the sky, towards whomever is calling from the sky. The next stanza clarifies the whole death scene, as expressed from an observer: the person's eyes are open, they're not quite breathing, and they're seeing things no one here on earth can even imagine. Implies they're dying. The line "so afraid...these days will fall like tears down your face" may point to a suicide. No doubt anyone close to death would be afraid. "Days" are associated with tears falling down someone's face--implying that the person is hurting, and has been for some time. Again the dying person is reassured that the time of suffering is coming to an end. The song ends with discordant crashing sounds--like a car accident, the end of something terrible and inevitable and painful---the "broken end." |
