I've always thought this was one of Stipe's more transparent lyrics; surely nightswimming is sex? It seems clear to me that the song is about gay sex post AIDS - 'It's not like years ago'. |

| "Tragically reassuring" is a good phrase. I want this song played at my funeral. To me it's about love spanning all of time, and how true love never dies.
