This song is about a relationship that has died. The couple live their lives so apart from one another that they don't even know they're partner anymore. There's constant awkward silence. The love is gone. The only thing keeping them together is their kids. The kids need both a mother and a father and the parents also need the kids. So, they keep putting on that fake smile and living the 'perfect' life, everyday growing further apart and becoming more unhappy. Exactly why I'm not getting married. Almost everyone I know that is married is going through this. Or they're already divorced. No one wants to make the effort anymore. |

To me this songs tells of the relationship between a father and a child. Although the father thinks the world of his child and is proud of everything she's become, he doesn't know how to express it. He's got a lot going on in his life and on his mind. It doesn't seem to bother her because she's used to it. Although they live so close to eachother, they're extremely distant. Years go by and he gets old and sick. The unexpected yet unavoidable happens and the father dies. She realizes how much he really did love him but how little they actually knew about eachother. |

This song is pretty self-explanatory actually. About a married man with a girlfriend. His wife knows about the 'other woman' but is clinging to the fact that maybe things will get better. She doesn't want to leave him because she 'has everything to lose'. She can't imagine life without him so she reasons that sharing him is better than not having him at all. The other woman knows he's married but has slowly fallen deep in love with him. She wants him for herself also but knows it will never happen. He's too worried about losing his marriage. Both women long to believe that they are the special one. That they are the one he loves the most. But they both only have him some of the time. When he isn't with them, he's with the other one. So they're miserable. And when he is with them, they're miserable anyway because all they can think about is whether or not he'd rather be with the other one. Although the man is the one in the wrong, both women are suffering equally. |

The first time I heard this song, I thought the same thing as a couple of the other posts. To me, this song describes the 'relationship' between a child and a parent. The child unsuccessfully tries to live up to his/her parents' expectations. Eventually they give up. They know they can't and that all they are and ever have been is a disappointment. It's an incredibly depressing song and situation. Love this song. |
