I think the break up fits more than the death explanation for the single line "but I'm willing to give it another try". Everything else could be applied to both, but for me that line makes it clear that it is more about a severed relationship than a death. You can't exactly give it another try with a dead person! :-) |

Quite a random idea there from TheRandomGuy...
I think the song may be about a couple where one of them thinks that now that they've finally got together all their problems are over, "the battle is won" (they might have had to overcome some obstacles to be together,) but the narrator thinks that this is only the beginning of their struggle, they've "only just begun" and their relationship is still going to be tested, and that a true relationship isn't necessarily all roses and puppies. But it doesn't sound negative, she is just trying to be pragmatic.
Maybe it could be about a couple where one of them was married to someone else when they fell in love, or maybe even a gay couple, something anyway that makes them feel like they have had to hide and lie and have secrets "away from the sun".
Anyway just an idea.
What I really like about this song is that it's in triple time, which is not as common in pop music. |

A long distance relationship maybe? The narrator's lover is in another town somewhere and she is thinking of giving it all up and go to him. |

The narrator hasn't got a penny to his name and lives from one day to the next with no possessions or a place to call his own, hopping on and off trains and travelling the country. But he loves his lifestyle, there is no bitterness and he isn't looking for sympathy, just maybe a cigarette or a bite to eat and somewhere to crash for the night, but if he doesn't get it, no bother, he can take care of himself, he knows how to beg, borrow and steal. |

I agree with vittau, to me the song always sounded a bit sad as well, even if I don't quite understand what it's about.
I always felt that the party girl was a girl everyone assumed was a bit of a 'bad girl' or easy and maybe taking drugs and she lived up to her reputation even though deep down she would rather escape the party scene but doesn't know how. And Trash is maybe a junkie and Trampoline just some highschool drop out who just goes out every night to pick up girls, but they don't have any real meaning in their lives, even though outsiders think that they are having a great time partying all the time, but on the inside it's a hollow lifestyle. |

I wonder if it could be about a guy who is daydreaming his life away in a fantasy world and watching too many action movies and playing computer games or something, and then finally meets a real girl and realizes what life is all about? |

Hmmm... on the one hand you say they "replicate the old rock sound down to it's most precise detail", and on the other you claim that "they totally botch the chords for 'Lust For Life.'". Kinda contradicting yourself there maybe? |

This is just an idea but some of the words in the song have kind of evoked a story in my mind... Is it possible he's talking about an accidental pregnancy that is turning their summer fling sour('beauty's gone all sore')? They are counting the days on their fingers from her last period and maybe the day they made love, and they thought they were safe but they got it wrong because they were so in love the hot summer days appeared to all be melting into each other. ('If we got it wrong, it's because the days have no numbers'). Now he's thinking about running away together.
As I said, just an idea, and it doesn't explain everything in the song, for example, I have no idea what 'honey dripping pale of skin while there's bodies underneath the floor' is supposed to mean. :-) |
