this is definitely about soccer (or, 'football' if it suits you), but since that's such an unusual topic for such a serious song, it's true that most people who don't try to listen and understand the lyrics think it's about politics. one of my friends when he heard it thought the song was about hitler(lol!); some lines I can kind of see what he was getting the idea from, as if the song were reaching out to hitler in a way of calling him human, etc. I just think it's really interesting how different (somewhat cryptic) lyrics are recieved so differently by every individual.
all aside, it's a beautiful song, beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice |

I just really understood this song for the first time, it just came on and as I was listening to it I really sort of grasped onto the emotional theme of it. Im a young girl and this afternoon my psychotherapist(lol) was talking about how I think I'm a huge underachiever, and how I'm extremely hard on myself, obsessive over doing everything the world dictates to me as what's supposed to be, and when to do it. So many young people constantly worry about making sure their future is "secure" and in the meantime completely forget about the present world around them. So today my doctor explained to me why there's really nothing to rush towards, just take it day by day etc, because in the end, it is what it is. I think thats what the song means when it says "vienna waits for you"; at the end of the day, life is good and bad and there's no use stressing over keeping the good when it's good or beating yourself up when it's bad- in the end, it's really all the same so 'vienna waits for you'-- just take your path as it comes. |

this song is about wanting to do or make something, but knowing that it must be done outside, in the world, for it to be meaningful. but what if you don't want to go outside? and what if when you try, everything you feel out there makes you want to go back inside? **also, not so much being literally inside.... but more like, inside yourself. being an introverted sort of person and finding the utmost comfort in being alone.
(story of my life.) why hasn't anyone else commented on this? |

this song is about the downwards pull of depression, its intrigue.. not only to the depressed, but to those other people who smile (at the depressed, who they are so intrigued by)
I also agree with the other comment, as I got the left-brain right-brain thing from it as well, not as a seperate theme but just as a different way to divide the two seperate sides.
I feel like it's saying that all that's above you is what makes you feel so pathetic, pushing you further and further down into your depression. the thought of being one of the disadvantaged makes us feel hopeless, so even as we do good things and attempt to pull ourselves up and out of sadness, the downwards pull is always so temptingly strong |
