We can remember swimming in December Heading for the city lights in 1975 We share in each other Nearer than farther The scent of a lemon drips from your eyes / Hernan Cortez's troops had to swim to the city of Technoctilan after bridges were burned. Also references the 1975 Crazy Horse song, Cortez the Killer. Lemon water is a treatment of smallpox. We are the people that rule the world A force running in every boy and girl All rejoicing in the world Take me now, we can try /Self-explanatory. We lived an adventure Love in the Summer Followed the sun till night Reminiscing other times of life For each every other The feeling was stronger The shock hit eleven, got lost in your eyes /Cortez returned in summer 1521, in the 11th year of his expedition, to capture Technoctilan. Each soldier was promised every other wealth he could plunder, but the vast gold reserves resulted in inflation. I can't do well when I think you're gonna leave But I know I try Are you gonna leave me now? Can't you be believing now? /Spain tries to hold its empire together with Catholicism. Can you remember and humanise? It was still where we'd energised Lie in the sand and visualise Like it's '75 again /Reminiscing the year 75, the peak of the Roman empire after the conquest of Jerusalem. I know everything about you You know everything about me We know everything about us /Anthropologists study native cultures, and Spain spreads European education. It's a song about colonialism. |

It's about this news article. http://policegazette.us/TodaysNews_8-1-2010_Kennedy.html Our Internet-Research Editor, who broke the story about the relationship between Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and Captain Edward Smith of the Titanic, has uncovered evidence that President John F. Kennedy actually was not assassinated, but instead committed suicide. The scenario goes like this: Overwhelmingly distraught over the strange death of his mistress Marilyn Monroe 15 months earlier, the Kennedy family's unfortunate ties to the Mafia, his chronic health problems requiring his taking a laundry list of prescription medications, and other stressors, President Kennedy felt he had no choice but to end it all. But how? The nation's chief executive could not be seen taking his own life. The country's image was at stake. It had to have the appearance of an assassination. So casting about for a person who could help, Kennedy settled on Lee Harvey Oswald, a low-level U.S. intelligence operative stuck in a career rut. But this was a big deal. Oswald would risk being caught and accused of killing the president. No small potatoes. So Kennedy promised to arrange his escape and offered to pay him $1.5 million. Oswald agreed and hired an accomplice to help with the plan. |

| Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics | 12 years ago |

http://heyitsmebarb.tumblr.com/post/6103747820 MAPS- Yeah Yeah Yeahs The meaning behind my favorite YYYs song: Fact: Karen O wrote this song about her then boyfriend, Angus Andrew. MAPS is an acronym for My Angus Please Stay. Angus was set to leave and accept a job offer and this was Karen O’s inspiration for the song. Another Fact: In this music video, according to an interview with Karen O, she said her tears were real and the reason for this: "They were real tears. My boyfriend at the time was supposed to come to the shoot — he was three hours late and I was just about to leave for tour. I didn’t think he was even going to come and this was the song that was written for him…” - NME |

| Actually forget that. The album was released a few days after Kurt's suicide and Violet was written a while before then. | |

Listen to this backwards (look up "Violet backwards" on Youtube or something). Some very interesting possible backmasking; at one point Courtney says, "I did away my lover". And the song just sounds cool anyway in reverse. Personally I don't believe that Courtney is murderer or anything but she may have felt responsible for Cobain's suicide. She had filed for divorce and that was probably one of the things that drove Kurt over the edge. To me this song is at least partly about Cobain's suicide. In the first verse Courtney admits that she made a mistake in starting some relationship (you should learn when to say no...). In the third verse she talks about how Kurt became a celebrity and had everything he wanted yet still wasn't happy. The fifth verse is especially powerful if you consider it Courtney's personal "fuck you" to Kurt, telling him to overdose on heroin. At this point she hates him so much she wants it to happen. In this interpretation the only verse that doesn't really fit is the second one ("might last a day...") so in the end it doesn't make complete sense. Her relationship with Kurt was a big part of her life and you'd assume that she'd write at least one song about it. But I still don't think that Violet is about his suicide. Still, it does go well with the song. |
