" i think it's two different ways of looking at the situation. if he had been strong enough, he could have changed. but at that time, he didn't think he should have to change for her. i think the song is wrestling with the idea of changing for someone vs staying true to who you are. if she was strong enough for him, he wouldn't have needed to change. but if he was strong enough he could/would have changed. the chorus of "If I could be with someone like you/Would you, would you be strong enough for me" seems to be him asking himself if changing would have made a difference. or if the roles were reversed if she would have changed for him... the way the song is sung it seems like he's come to the realization that he should have changed for her, but he wasn't strong enough for her. |
