| Nine Inch Nails – The Hand That Feeds Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I know that by now this song has been correctly interpreted a million times over(despite many idiots' best attempts at claiming it's about addiction, a woman, or Trent's identity), but I just came upon this quote: "If you love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams <--- founding father and member of the "sons of liberty," ...if you're thinking of the beer label, just stop reading now. I wonder if Trent was referring to this quote in particular or just the commonly used phrase. In any event it shows I have too much time to think about these things. Anyway, it recaptures the message of breaking apart from a despotic government and the whole "don't tread on me" rhetoric, i.e. "Just how much shit are we willing to put up with before we reject the shitty leadership we have?" While Trent has said that his songs have multiple meanings, he remarked that this was one of his most straight-forward songs. He's ripping on religion only insofar that politicians use religion to back their actions. ...Or maybe the song IS about sucking dick... |
