A few of these lyrics need changing I think: "Say they got me on CCTV and the pussy homeboys told on me" should be "Say they got me on CCTV and some pussy-hole boy told on me" "Step on to my soil you'll get your whole face rearranged" should be "Step into my zone, get your whole face rearranged" In "Better mind out when they come through the manner man", 'manner' should be spelt 'manor'. Where it says "Anything through the door cold on the wheelers" I think Dizzee actually says "Anything for the dough...". And at the end "Every time I get your whole face rearranged" should be "Step into my zone, get your whole face rearranged" again. |

I think this song is an incredible indictment of the role of violence in American culture and mythos. The end of the first chorus: You done seen what they bring to Iraq Now bring it back to the source Land of the physical force Land of the gun That's powerful right there. There aren't many American MCs who go beyond just documenting specific or general acts of violence and actually try to provide a better understanding of the prominence of violence in the American psychology. America IS the land of the physical force. It's built into the society from the individual up to the biggest corporations and the state itself. Nobody giving up healthcare / nothing but heat The question that needs to be asked is why? |

A lot of people seem to have found their meaning in this song as something introspective. For me though, this is a song being sung to someone else. It's like, when you are in a relationship, or starting to get into a relationship, the way people complicate things. The voice is directed towards a part of someone else that is stopping them from giving themselves fully to you, even though it is what you both want. The part of someone that holds them back, maybe out of fear, sometimes fear of being hurt themselves, but more often, fear of hurting or disappointing the other person. The song is saying, please, surrender yourself, there is no need to hold anything back. If you keep a part of you just for yourself, then some part of you will never be fully realised. It's saying that, by holding back, so as not to hurt me, all you are really doing is denying me from fully realising myself in you, denying us from finding ourselves in each other. To the metal heart, you are selfish because you are standing in the way of the love that could be between these two, living, beating hearts. It's a love song, it's a plea. It's a happy song because it is full of hope for a love that is so close, you can almost reach out and touch it. It is a beautiful song. |

I always thought the lyrics was: So glad that we made it Because all the kids in the street whisper sounds that sweep the stars under their feet I always thought that the song was a love song, from one person who's been through a hard time to another person who has. In my mind they'd managed to overcome their adversity through each other's love, and now it's like the dawn of a new day. The kids in the street are those people who haven't had to suffer so much, who make everything look easy. They can ride along through life without having to think anything dark, and so it's as if they're walking on the stars. The person singing the song is basically saying "thank god that chapter of our lives is over..we still have each other, and now we can go back out in the street and walk amongst the stars like all the other kids..like we should have been able to do all along". |

With regard to the video, the story can be found here: http://aleceiffel.free.fr/videos.html Basically the band were supposed to appear on Top of the Pops, but BBC policy only allowed bands to come on and play singles that had videos. So the band went to some quarry in Manchester (where I think TOTP was still being filmed at the time) and shot a few seconds of footage that was slowed down to last the 3 or 4 minute duration of the song. As far as I know, they never got asked back on the show, so it was all in vain anyway. Although I guess if there was no video, the song would never come on MTV, so it's not all bad. I like this song a lot. Frank Black (as he was then) opened his set with this when I saw him with the Catholics. T'was mint. |
