Vampire Weekend – Oxford Comma Lyrics | 15 years ago |
hmmm, Thing is, the title of the song is "Oxford Comma." I first thought it was 'Oxford climber' too, but I don't think that makes any sense any more. |

since the whole point of an oxford comma (who gives a fuck about them anyway) is to remove ambiguity from a list of articles, i wonder if the last stanza is supposed to flow like an Echer painting from frame to frame. Why would you lie about how much coal you have? Why would you lie about something dumb like that? Why would you lie about anything at all? First the window, then it's through the wall Why would you tape my conversations? Show your paintings at the United Nations Lil' Jon, he always tells the truth Li'l Jon is clearly referenced for his candor in sexual discussion. (Little) John Bolton represented an administration who used (abused) FISA Warrants to tape conversations of Americans. When Colin Powell et al presented their case for invading Iraq, Picasso's Guernica (a large mural of WWII atrocity, serving to remind of the horrors of war) was covered up. That painting wasn't shown at the United Nations during those debates. This fluidity between Li'l Jon and John Bolton especially makes sense if the song actually is about a relationship with a diplomat's daughter. |

Vampire Weekend – Campus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
An Oxford Comma would really help clarify the chorus, no? How am I supposed to pretend I never want to see you again How am I supposed to pretend I never want to see you again 'Jeeze you know, I just can't hide these feelings for you. When can we get back together?' Think: Top Gun OR How am I supposed to pretend[,] I never want to see you again How am I supposed to pretend[,] I never want to see you again 'Shit, that actually happened? And now its going to influence our social/professional relationship? I really, really, never want to see you again.' Think: Don't Stand So Close to Me (Police) |
Vampire Weekend – I Stand Corrected Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I don't think its about him being whipped, or in a shitty relationship at all. "I have been lax In double screening what I say It wasn't funny anyway" Sounds exactly like a poorly-chosen/delivered joke that he's fessing up to. "No one cares when you are wrong But I've been at this far too long To act like that when we should be In perfect harmony" Read: 'I could point to things you've done wrong too, dear, but I've been in too many relationships to think that will end well. Instead, I'll let you have this one, it was my bad, I stand corrected, can I just hold your hand again?' "Lord knows I haven't tried I'll take my stand One last time Forget the protocol I'll take your hand Right in mine" Ok, not too sure how this one plays out. "Lord knows I haven't tried" sounds to me like he wants to improve himself, but hasn't put in the effort. Taking his stand one last time could then mean he's hoping this will be the last time he gets called on something like this and has to stand corrected. Ain't got nothing for how he forget[s] the protocol, however. |
