My friend and I were listening to this song one day in 9th grade when we were reading Lord of the Flies in English. At the same exact moment we said "Oh my fucking god! this song is about Lord of the Flies!" Lord of the Flies is one of my favorite books. Gatsbys American Dream is one of my favorite bands. This song is so great! |

I think this song is about a girl who can't stand up for herself so she is used, but he still loves her and wants to save her. He wants to show her who she really is behind the mask for her by others. In the very last verse of the song he says now I'VE walked through hell for you (not 'I'd' again) I think this is such a sweet and amazing song! |

I don't think this song is necessarily about scene or emo kids. It's about people pretending to be something they're not and that it's all superficial. And it's about how these same people are hypocrites ("when you walk by a group of quote unquote normal people you chuckle to yourself patting yourself on the back as you scoff With the same superiority complex shared by the high school jocks who made your life a living hell And makes you a slave to the competitive capitalist dogma you spend every moment of your waking life bitching about".) Max is criticizing people who are fake and act and dress a certain way to imress an "unseen panel of hipster judges". Overall, I think he's saying that we're all humans and no one should have the mind set that they are superior, and he's sick of people who do. |

| I agree with in2theoceansarms that the "birds in bars" and reptiles lines have to do with caging animals to look for our own enjoyment. it goes with the whole 'human superiority complex' theme in the song. | |
