When I think of this song, I think of a guy who's been changing himself and trying to act perfect for everybody for all his life. everything he does is looked upon with judgement. this song is him basically just declaring himself free, and just mentally taking himself away from the social state of mind he was stuck in.
i love this song. |

it basically describes that pathetic weak state of love, where basically you can't get yourself to ask or tell said person your in love with. i mean christ, for all you know the person your in love with might like you back, but shit ur too weak....i can relate to this song so much. |

i personally think its about phenomons/scenes in general. when something hits american society big, everybody gets excited. when a certain phenomon/scene starts people who originally were part of that scene are pleasantly suprised and happy("things were much better than we had planned"). and then when people start to come on to this current trend they realize how great it is. It's perfect. And then people realize that the trend is a perfect business oppurtunity. They make money off of this trend. And that's when they look for more of that trend and the scene gets duplicated by other people("we had to multiply ourselves").And the chorus("and he spent himself etc") basically comes from the point of view of the people who originally were part of the scene before it hit big. It's basically saying that this thing they once enjoyed is all about money and now they abandon this phenomon/scene. The Phenomon personified has left from being a something that people would enjoy and love as a personal thing, to a corporate product. Meanwhile this scene is becoming bigger and bigger and business people are becoming millionaires from it. But eventually people abandon the scene and the scene fades into the musical abyss and the people who got so rich from it look back at it saying "hey as long as it got us rich" and they're also saying that it's not their fault for the selling out of this phenomenon, and that how were they supposed to know the scene would end up fake, when really it was those people who took advantage of it that made it fake. and for the people who originally supported this phenomenon are basically left with nothing and "everything's ruined".
