I reckon this is all about...
A vet who comes back, but see's his wife with someone else, hense her undoing an extra button on her blouse and checking the kids are out the house. He's see's this from a dark corner of the bar so she doesn't know. He wanted her to lie next to him at night and be there, but she isn't there and he is up all night. So he goes to his family, who are all happy, but don't realise how much pain he is in.

I love this song, but I have to admit, the acoustic version is so much better. With just him playing on the guitar by himself, it's just pure class. Also, the tempo changes which makes it sound so sweet. This is generally one of my favourites of his. And I have all of his albums and this just stands out a mile. |

I think this song is about when he was mentoring a drug addicted teenager. And how he wanted to help him so badly, but he couldnt, as either the teenager was to ill/addicted or the teenager left and did soemthing else, and maybe even the teenager died. Possibly the song is about how the doctors are really not helping the teenager but the teenager doesnt want to know about anything they say as he has no respect for them. Also I dont know why but i get the feeling that the teenager doesnt actually wan to live, its just a hunch but I really feel that. but whatever the meaning is this song is just so touching. |

i think its a mixture, maybe a man has come back from service to his hometown and its all different, possibly for the worst. Or maybe it could be about america as a whole, im stuck between those to ideas. But in the chorus it says "hey pretty darling dont wait up for", this could mean one of two things. Literally he is telling his girl not to wait for him to come back and to move on in life. Or it could be telling his hometown/America to carry on its journey and not to wait for him to catch up. |
