recently I read 'Into the wild' and listening to this song now it sort of reminds me of it.. that he went to live in the Arizona sand... to me the song is all about that..getting away from the life you were 'supposed' to have. And also trying to discover who you are and who other people are by inconsquential things. Mostly I love the melody of this song..it's haunting! |

One of the saddest songs I've ever heard.. the way she sings it is incredible and she doesn't make it too sentimental. She sort of sings against the sadness of it in a light way...until the very end. She's definitely talking to herself though - it's pretty clear especially when she says "my one" and the very end. I like the way she uses "you"..almost as if she's angry at herself for assuming he could commit/love her... |

I saw her sing this last night live...she still sings it with such conviction and passion even though I think it was one of the first songs she wrote in the band... she said that the guy she was singing about sent her a letter years later and she said "too late man!" |

I don't think there is a girl in this song at all.. "I like you the best" refers to the alcohol...I think he's talking to himself when he says ""the things you could do" etc. Then I feel like it shifts and its the alcohol saying "drink up with me now and forget all about... drive them away"etc. All in all he's talking about the effect alcohol/drugs have on us all and what it can do to our heads... |

It's not "unhappiness was when I was young" it's "unhappiness... where's when I was young" so she is perhaps saying that she is unhappy now but when she was young it was different. |
