All That Remains – Indictment Lyrics 17 years ago
When I originally read the lyrics, my first thought was that Phil was referring to people that interpret religion the wrong way. i.e. cults, and/or radicals. Islamic people are not all the same and it is unfair to say that he is referring to them because a select group are using religion to incite violence on other people. The Koran and other religous texts like the Bible are misinterpreted all the time amd used to kill people en masse. On another standpoint, these lyrics could be applied to political leaders; and how some have a huge thirst for violence. Take the Holocaust as an example of that. And on an even broader standpoint, he could be speaking to any and all people who go against what they learned as children to love everyone as equals. I agree that this song is very controversial.

All That Remains – Believe in Nothing (Nevermore cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is a little depressing to me.

"Into a strange new world, into the after
All your tears might find you've fallen too far
Take another look, take another ride
Can't we make them leave the hate behind"

Knowing that Phil went through a break up, I think this is a sort of loss of hope in finding that other one to love. I myself have been there before. Where you start to lose faith that there is someone out there for you. A person in this state of mind can have a lot of anger towards a certain person or people in general. These lines might be about looking past that and giving someone a chance, even though you have been hurt in the past.

"Nothing is sacred when no one is saved
Nothing's forever so count your days
Nothing is final and no one is real
Pray for tomorrow and find your empty still"

It's hard to give yourself to someone after experiencing so much heartache, and a lot of doubt has a tendency to creep into your mind. Without the companionship that we all crave, there is a sense of emptiness in our hearts.

All That Remains – Become The Catalyst Lyrics 17 years ago
"For fear my eyes are closed"

I see this line in a way that closed eyes can be likened to a closed mind.

"And now it swells in me
Smash all my defenses down"

When somebody decides to make the move to open their mind to new things, they are often confronted with situations that force them to let their defenses down, and I think that fits in this context. The fact that someone could make the decision to take a look at their present beliefs and possibly shatter them all in the name of something they are unsure of takes courage and it takes a strong heart. I believe this song is about someone who breaks the barrier of a closed mind in order to accomplish a goal that is much bigger than they had ever imagined. I'm not a very religous person, so I don't see it as someone taking faith in a new religion, but it could be compared to that type of situation. I see it more as a case where someone uses the courage and strength that they earned from opening their mind to accomplish some goal. Maybe a major life event like going to and finishing college or overcoming racism and becoming an activist. The main point here is that if you are going to accomplish anything, you need to keep an open mind and use the strength (or rage) that you can gain from what you learn.

As far as the definition of catalyst goes, a catalyst in chemistry is usually an enzyme. The enzyme is what gives the two target molecules the ability to react with each other at a lower energy level than they would otherwise react at. The catalyst remains unchanged by the reaction and after it creates the reaction between the first two molecules, it is free to create the reaction between two new molecules. The catalyst is never used up in a reaction. I think that using this word in this song means that you should always stay true to yourself.
