I thought it was his daughter singing, but son works, too. I'm pretty sure it's one of the kids he has with wife Edie Brickell because the child sounds so much like her to me. This is a great song. |

| Talking Heads – (Nothing But) Flowers Lyrics

To me this song is about man's irrelevance in the grand scheme of things. Our whole way of life could end. Rome probably thought they would never go down, nor Pompei, nor "Atlantis." Nature will keep going on with or without humans.
Having lived in developing countries that aren't quite as reliant on technology yet, I have seen that living without some modern day conveniences is more healthy. Is it better for the economy? Maybe not, but I certainly felt healthier walking everywhere rather than driving. I cooked my own fresh food every day in contrast to eating the fast food that I eat almost every day here in the states. I know I looked and felt better than ever.
But to go along with my line of thought (I tend to digress), none of that would even be relevant to nature. Nature doesnt' care what humans do, it will go on forever whether we survive or not.
The same type of theme is used by poets like D.H. Lawrence and more. |

| The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics

This song haunts me. I think it's genius, and to me means everything everyone else has said and then more. I think they're also talking about how technology will kill us all eventually. This is a theme written about time and time again by writers like Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, Mary Shelley, and Michael Crichton.
The fact that it's on an album called Living in the Plastic Age just backs this theory up, since plastic is killing our planet as well as possibly contributing to the spread of cancer.
I can't really provide any evidence of this, but I also feel that the Radio Star could also be metaphorical for childhood, which gets eaten up by Video (adulthood). Thus, the loss of innocense, of a purer time. Great song. Most awesome lyrically and musically. |

As deep as this song is probably supposed to be, I can't help but think of a scene from Singles, where the main character gets back together with her safety net of a boyfriend, the "sensitive pony-tail man."
Did the screenwriters have the scene from this song in their minds while concocting this movie scene? It's sad, yet funny. |

This song, like Girlfriend in a Coma, by the Smiths, is a statement about how we do seem to always hurt the ones we love. We get angry and insults fly, but the thought of losing them tears us apart. I know from personal experience just what he means here. At least I'd like to think I do. |

I do believe do date, that he's been married at least 3 times, not to mention other serious relationships he was in. Yes, he's no stranger to love and I'm sure many of his songs reflect this. |

This is my least favorite song on this album. I can't deny the lyrics are well-crafted, but the tune seems so...annoying to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of his biggest fans of all time, but this one bugs. |

What? No comments? I was hoping to make some sense out of this one. Maybe the congressman is just "the man," or the government. He's sick and tired of waiting for the government to do anything, and so he should be. They aren't going to do anything that's of any use to anyone. Maybe the girl like the easychair is someone he really could depend on (whoever she may be), but certainly not the government.
Let us depend on real people, or better yet, only ourselves to make us truly happy.
Ok, I know that's probably way off what the true meaning is, but I thought I'd give it a good college try. |

I always thought Simon was singing on a more personal level in this song. There's a theme that seems to weave throughout many of his songs...Graceland, America. He's looking for that something, maybe it is just hope, but maybe it's the one thing he's searching for that will make his life complete. That could be the one thing we are all searching for, and maybe it's different for each of us. |

Whenever I hear this song, I think of a vacation my family took to San Francisco when I was a kid. I listened to Simon and Garfunkels' Greatest Hits over and over again on my headphones throughout that whole trip. This song reminds me of my brief encounter with childhood. It's a mental photograph, kind of like what Simon refers to in that song from Bookends: "time it was, what a time it was. A time of innocence, a time of confidences...preserve your memories, they're all that's left you." |

| Donovan – There Is A Mountain Lyrics

Stephen King refered to this song in his book about writing. He said the ideas for stories just come to you, like..."first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is. I think that's an awesome way of thinking about it, and I like what Rhoda says, too.
When I was younger my sisters and I also joked that he must've been trippin' and actually spinning around confusedly, seeing the mountain and then not. |

I'd never really payed attention to the lyrics before, but they really are sad. I got an image right away from the "paint your face with despair" line of a young woman putting on whore-like makeup. The despair is painted all over her face. |

This song is haunting, yet beautiful. I heard that the Hurdy Gurdy was also used a lot in old black and white films when ghosts were coming. That adds to the creepiness of this song. I would be interested to hear and see a real Hurdy Gurdy. |
