As far as i'm aware of this song isn't symbolism, i was told that when phil collins was a young boy, he saw from a distance a wo/man stand there and watch a man drown no even attempting to help them. He carried this around with him all his life and finally he wrote this song, invited the wo/man to the show who did this gave them front row seats, and they had no isea he was doing this. he sang the song to see if they would know what he was talking about, and feel the guilt and remore they should have for years. |

This song is about a girl who is so deeply in love with someone and she can't controll her feelings. Apparently as she says "the timing is cruel, I need, and i don't want to need" She dosn't know how to go about this feeling, cause obviously this guy isn't available. She thinks she sees her soulmate in him but she wonders what love is because she feels this pain and she dosn' think love should be like this but because seh can't have him it is. She feels like she falling/fading away and she needs to hear him say her name and she will lie to herself in the sound of his voice bretending he's hers, she says her sheet is so thin meaning that whats covering how she feels is right below the surface and isn't buried deep. Worries the fact that she couldn't bear to loose him. After all some people say its better to not have something at all rather than to loose it but i think you have to enjoy the good part and deal with the bad afterwords. She explains that she needs him too much to loose him |
