What I think many people miss about this song is the fact that Stevie Wonder is blind, so there is a version of this song that includes audio clips of his interactions with her like her crying, and taking a bath. He's giving us a glimpse of how he "sees" his daughter. This song tears me up as I have a little girl of my own and she is my world. |

I love this song, but I've always been torn as to its meaning. I've got two different interpretations that both seem to fit. The first is simply that Cynthia is very imaginative and original. She wears what she wants and her personality shines through in her clothes, her smile, and her drawings. Her list of breakfast items reflects how she sees the world in sort of a unicorns and rainbows way. My second interpretation is a bit sad in that Cynthia is very poor but happy in spite of it. She wears different color socks because that's all she has. She says that her breakfast consists of starfish and coffee because in reality she did not have breakfast, and her lunch box is empty. I much prefer the happier interpretation, but who knows what Prince is ever really thinking. |

| I've got to agree with gbert. This song is about the singer being attracted to a guy even though he has a girlfriend. He stains his sheets because he's had a wet dream about the guy and his girl is hurt and confused by this. | |
