i always picture Leonard Cohen sitting in this tall grey lighthouse-like structure, looking out at the sea (and it's a dark, angry sea)... i feel he's writing about how it's like to be in the (serious) music business..how it's like to devote your entire life to music..and he makes it seem real lonely, but then there's nothing he can do, he's just paying the price for his own choices... i love it! and i think it's really beautiful..i get goosebumps when i hear him sing it...it's the best feeling ever! i wish he'd written or performed with Eric Clapton..has he? does anyone know of them having worked together? |

Initially, the song to me is about a materialistic woman, a woman who wants to be the best in everything she does or has...a very headstrong person..she wants to be the best and she's trying to buy herself a place in everyone's good books.however,as the dope kicks in, the song, or the lyrics, spin out of the writer's control.when a person reaches a different plane of existence,like dope takes you to another place,you begin writing stuff you dont understand.it's your deepest level of consciousness talking and not you.so it's diffficult for us or LZ themselves to understand this song they have written. and that's what's so beautiful.it's disconnected and disoriented.it could mean a thousand different things.because it's not what men with a control over their senses have written, rather it's the innermost voice of reason that man passes on to his own.it's like the voice of a soul-eternally wise.and it's not the commercial fluff we hear nowadays.that's why i love it!!! |
