This song is so sweet. Such a rare topic for a song these days, not to mention it's so damn catchy. I really think he is saying "vicious wave" in the second line of the second verse. It not only sounds like it, but also "wave" rhymes with "grave" in the last line, so it seems to fit better than anything else. Anyway, Animal Collective FTW. |

this might be my favorite song of hers. such simple lyrics, and yet they resonate so profoundly with sincere and intense emotions... a song of foolish mistakes, and reactions to the hurt that they caused. the intentions of both parties were pure, wanting to show their love for each other and failing because of immaturity of one or both. yet they tried with all their might to hold onto control and each other in order to make up for it, only to realize that it is impossible because there is too much pain from their mistakes, and they couldn't force what needed to come naturally. this song is the singer's last attempt at reaching out to his/her lover before leaving, because it feels hopeless, that the lover has been pushed too far away, that trust has been destroyed... it seems they have been damaged beyond repair. the rejection and destruction of hopes is too much for the singer to take, and the song is in a very defensive tone. it has somewhat of a "sour-grapes" attitude. none of the singer's mistakes are acknowledged. "i wait with a plate piled high with my love that you won't eat from" "love you think you can contain me, but the future is already known" "we give up our rest and the best of us though we'd be better off alone" "this is so laughable, whatever happened to knowing that this was forever" "file off the sharpness of feelings so i'll be protected from all of your evil" "i'll be gone, finally done, never to come to your rescue" god... i miss him so fucking much. |

| i don't really have a sense of rhythm, but ever notice how when she sings "you had been drinking from the carton" there is a skipped drum beat? and i think another one not too long after that. always drives me crazy. like the song though. | |

To me, this song is about a relationship between two people who can't be together because of uncontrollable circumstances, because one has died, or perhaps because one is already in a relationship that they cannot leave. this is why he mentions sorrow for "where i end and you begin" being where dinosaurs roam the earth, because the dinosaurs were living thinking they were aiming for some purpose, but unbeknownst to them they had no chance for fulfillment because "the sky turns green" and they all die, which is a metaphor for a hopeless situation that ends badly, with no control. The verse saying "I am up in the clouds, and i can't come down" can have the more obvious meaning of being in heaven, looking down watching but not being able to come back to to earth, and the person having been "left... alone" at the point of death... or it could mean the person is in a situation that seems perfect, and should be by all logic, but isn't because he/she is unhappy and wants to (but cannot) "take part" in life with the other, who has moved on because they gave up. The beautiful and saddening verse beginning with "X will mark the place" speaks of the defining moment when all hopes are crushed, when they are forced to part ways ("the parting of the waves"), and when their dreams for a life together are destroyed ("a house falling in the sea"). "I will eat you alive, there will be no more lies," means that at the time they part, the person's leaving will cause the other to have to face the truth about how they feel, and having to face all the raw emotion that they try to deny because it hurts, but can't... it is like being eaten alive. this song makes me cry. |
