This cover is just perfect. I honestly believe it couldn't possibly have been made any better. Seconding what someone earlier said, I love how simplistic this version is, because usually you can't cover a song and strip it down to the bare elements like that, while retaining the essence and emotion of the song. The fact that there's two components I think emphasises the beauty of Ian Curtis' lyrics further, and of course the brilliance and purity of Susannas voice! Although its simplistic throughout though, its not at all monotonous or boring, which again I think is a real achievement. Really, such an amazing song. I usually dislike when people post on songMEANINGS to say how much they love a song and nothing else, but seeing as its a cover, I thought itd be okay [= |

Logically, with the whole 'You are a believer, I am not' bit, this seems like its about a relationship which ends because one person is committed to a religion and the other isnt... I got the the feeling it could have a less obvious meaning to it as well? No idea what that could be, mind. |

Firstly, I blame this effing brilliant website for what has just happened to me. Second, the meaning part. So Id listened to this song a fair bit and just thought Id check out what people had to say about it on here... after reading some interpretations I noticed the interview extract where Tegan kind of tells the story behind the song, ish, and describes hearing it for the first time as 'like Sara was standing on [her] chest'. Well now I cannot listen to it the same way again. I've been listening to it on repeat for a while now, cannot stop crying, and Im now feeling that weight on my chest. Probably not in the same way Tegan did, seeing as I have no connection to the lyricist... but Oh. My. God. This is now probably one of my favourite songs every written, and this right here is why I love music so much. This amazing pure heartbreaking emotion can be portrayed so intensely and yet so simply through four and a half minutes of music. In terms of meaning, I have no connection to the subject matter, and yet Im completely defeated by emotion right now. The passion and emotion in her voice when she sings 'don't move so slow' is fucking beautiful. Id really like to see a movie of this being recorded or something, cause it sounds so honest and just... brilliant! In terms of what I can contribute to this board... not a lot, Id suggest reading that interview extract... but the 'outro', if you will, I think perfectly captures the meaning of the song. The repetition of 'I can't take it' is kind of haunting... she sings it perfectly controlled, and yet in my head somehow I can practically hear someone desperately screaming the words. Im so glad that this song is as 'simple' as it is. They haven't over-complicated it and you're just left with this stripped down... perfect communication of feeling. Id agree with whoever said it was interesting how vague the lyrics seem yet how the meaning is so clear. Particularly after reading Tegan's explanation, this definitely seems like a goodbye song. This is an insanely long comment, so I'll stop. But man I love this song! |
