Awolnation – Knights Of Shame Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song so much! This, good old "Free Bird", and The Mars Volta's "Day of the Baphomets" are my top 3 favorite long songs.

I particularly like part of the song starting with the lyric "skeletons" until the end. The beginning is alright, but it starts off really pop sounding. The beauty of the song is the massive sound changes that happen every 2 verses or so, it almost feels like a club mix of multiple other songs (kinda like "Day of the Baphomets").

Butthole Surfers – Ulcer Breakout Lyrics 12 years ago
Holy crap! CliffLandin, I'd never bothered to check for more "sensible" lyrics to this song since it didn't seem like the lyrics would make any sense even if I had the right words, but those lyrics make PERFECT sense. The song *almost* loses a bit of its intensity when you realize it's really just a simple song about racing. A classic truck, a big-ass engine, the starting/finishing line, the starter pistol... everything fits.

The Streets – Empty Cans Lyrics 13 years ago
nottheminder, it's not a proverb. The guy has been sitting in his apartment drinking because he's upset, and he's had so much to drink that all the empty cans form a line from one wall to the next. It could be a hyperbole, meaning there aren't really that many cans and it's just an exaggeration to show how much he's been drinking, but either way it just means he's been drinking a LOT due to his mood and his situation. The empty cans are just that, empty beer cans.

Amanda Palmer – Guitar Hero Lyrics 14 years ago
It seems to me that this song attempts to over dramatize the effect and purposes of playing video games. It also seems to be written by "someone" who obviously is not very familiar with games outside of common knowledge (like pause, reset, what Guitar Hero is, etc). You might even say they don't "get" games. Maybe the song is trying to say that games are pointless and desensitizing, but surely it can't be saying they're dangerous, because the half a million Modern Warfare 2 players haven't gone out and killed any body yet, and there isn't any reliable research showing successful attempts by the armed forces to turn soldiers into killing machines using video games.

If anything, I would like to think this song is about an emotionally disturbed individual who fills a void in their heart by playing violent video games, then decides it might be interesting to join the army and try it for real (shut up about all of that negative shit/you wanted to make it and now that you're in/you're obviously not gonna die/so why not take your chances and try). At one point before that it almost seems to defend games by suggesting they are harmless outlets (try to tell us using your hands/a picture's worth a million words/and that way nobody gets hurt), but then again this could just be a vague attempt at sarcasm.

And one last thing, if the song wasn't called Guitar Hero and didn't "pause and reset", it would be difficult to find any clear references to video games without taking shots in the dark; with that in mind, I think whatever point the song is supposed to make (and it obviously is trying to make SOME point), it only uses the topic of video games as a springboard to a more important topic.

Abney Park – Herr Drosselmeyer's Doll Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's pretty obvious that the doll is, in actuality, a sort of mechanical prostitute. That "very natural process", "dewy and sweet", "fully formed", "can be yours and yours again", "flesh is incorruptible", and the obvious reference to sin are all pretty plain innuendos. Also the "sour flesh" beneath her "limbs" and the dirty, cheap clothing the doll was wearing opposed to the tutu from the dance. The lyrics don't even suggest the possibility so much as they almost come right out and say it. Beautiful song either way, though!

Abney Park – Virus Lyrics 14 years ago
I think they're using zombies as a sort of loose metaphor for religion, getting in your brains and causing you to seek out the "uninfected" to share your disease with them. It's an awesome metaphor, and I'm glad it's not an outright religious bashing. After all, Catholicism (and thus Christianity) and Islam are just about equally messed up, no matter what your bias is; this is in contrast to the far more peaceful and accepting Hinduism and Buddhism.

It's only those 2 lines that directly refer to religion ("As it has for 2000 years / It's infected the Hindus, infected the Buddhists"), so that's the only clue tying it in as a religious metaphor. Otherwise, yeah, zombies.

Butthole Surfers – Ulcer Breakout Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm pretty sure every instance of "above" in the posted lyrics should be "in love." Sure, Butthole Surfers songs don't usually make much sense, but it doesn't sound like he says "above" at all. Plus, "in love" makes a LOT more sense.

My favorite part is the Chevy/Ford/Hemi/Lord verse. It flows so well and I don't even like pickup trucks.

The Decemberists – The Legionnaire's Lament Lyrics 14 years ago
"Frigidaire"? Seriously guys? It's not the damn brand name of a household appliance, he's saying "frigid air" as in "COLD AIR" because he's roasting alive in a hot desert. He wants a "cold air" to come passing by to cool him off.

Jeez, you'd think people would know by now that lyrics posted to random websites are not 100% accurate, are almost entirely user submitted and typed up by ear. Common sense should tell you that just because the lyrics here spell it like it's the fridge brand name does NOT guarantee that's what Colin is actually saying in the song. It's not some witty anachronistic pun.

Queens of the Stone Age – Turnin' On The Screw Lyrics 15 years ago
If we assume that "turning on the screw" uses the metaphor of over-tightening a screw (stripping the threads, ruining the screwdriver, probably cracking the wood or whatever) to mean simply "making the situation worse," then I think this song is about going from bad to even worse. If you assume also that the song is being sung by a single person or character, this narrator obviously has nothing to lose by making the situation worse. "You ain't a has been if you never was" and "Fear of failure's all you've started" help illustrated this, as well as the whole negative sound of all of the random quotes and phrases this song appears to be composed of. He even says "I'm a mess, I guess, I'm turning on the screw," which I take to mean, he's already screwed up (or screwed in general) so why not do whatever it is that will be making the situation worse?

My favorite line... "The jury is in, verdict: retarded."

The Mars Volta – Day Of The Baphomets Lyrics 15 years ago
Actually, the lyrics posted here look to be the official lyrics. I don't have time at the moment to check word for word, but if you go to the Mars Volta official website, they actually have most of their lyrics listed there.

From www.marsvolta.com (in case they don't match... you can go check for yourself):

Sawing off the pavement repenting their past lives might i be the only payment left to be left behind clay and pigment footsteps rust it boiling clean our bull let in linguistics that only we can breathe

i gotta prayer that’ll make you theirs now beneath sepulchers raise your entrails as an offer

fondling with pitchforks in a cattle prodded sea signaling the sedatives to emaciate their queen bowing in constriction anytime you leave we snuffed ourselves an angel and cut her by the wings

i gotta prayer that’ll make you theirs now beneath sepulchers raise your entrails as an offer

in my sight i was born to bring death at the footsteps of your home tonight i have sewn all the hair and crooked nails that you all have worn while your wife sits at home i plant the vermin because she needs it so

how long must we fold by hand the nuns are burning wheels again dent of mattress to make it bare come clean with the anecdote after all we came undone pale of sluts with host at fault one day we won’t pay your debt our centipedes will get theirs yet

poachers in your home poachers in your home

how long must we fold by hand the nuns are burning wheels again dent of mattress to make it bare come clean with the anecdote after all we came undone pale of sluts with host at fault one day we won’t pay your debt our centipedes will get theirs yet

fold the river by the lips as a cruel and smothered wind fits the gash with ornaments dawn is nodding off again raised the braille to read it clear gathered by the cholera rinse the burns in cauldrons help the palm we see a lens my hands secrete a monument my hands secrete a monument

i am the reason four your missing child they might be home but there’s no trace under your pillow i have left a spine oh the things we do when you’re away i saw the message that you wrote in the sand dismembered hints that carve away the anesthetic of your gospel said put a muzzle on the lamb

give me one page give me one page make it blank mace that i leak will rain give me one page give me one page make it blank race i inflict your way

maybe one day you’ll stop and realize the throne that you serve is dead

give me a plague give me a plague make it blank nothing you own is safe

Buckethead – We Are One Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure the lyrics here are 90% wrong. Usually, when you read lyrics for a song with hard to decipher vocals, you get that "OH, that's totally what he's saying!" feeling. But not in this case. I really, sincerely think that most of the song is gibberish, almost like scat but not impromptu as he repeats the same gibberish over and over.

For example, instead of "Sending a beating to go" it would be more like "sadaka bidika badaka bo." It makes more sense that it's gibberish since the video is about the animals being sewn into one chimera-like creature. Plus, I'm not sure who wrote the song (probably Serj but very well could have been Buckethead), but any System of a Down fan will know that Serj is infamous for fairly nonsensical lyrics at times, so it's not that weird to think of him singing a song that is literally gibberish. Of course there are some parts of the song that aren't gibberish, like the "we are one" part and probably one or two parts that might count as verses or refrains with actual words being sung.

And remember, this is a Buckethead song FEATURING Serj, and it's from a Buckethead album ("Enter the Chicken"), so more than likely it's not really an anti-war SoaD song.

That Handsome Devil – Viva Discordia Lyrics 15 years ago
Jeez, these lyrics are completely wrong... Is there any way to have this replaced with the CORRECT lyrics? (Note: Deepak Chopra is an Indian-American spiritualist and author. There is no "Deep October")

Ehh!
Lucy's a goth chick
Spit in the face of a jock at the mosh pit
Then the kid lost it
Saw her at the mall at the local Hot Topic
Her boyfriend was picking out a new chain wallet
Lucy's all talk
She really ain't got no heart for a fight
She'd rather see a dog show
Beat her face down till she looked like a Picasso
Even ripped the ring out her boyfriend's nostril

Brother's outside, smoking on a NewPort
Heard about his sister, running through the food court
Ran right over the dude from the shoe store
Rumored that he jumped down two floors, ooh, Lord!
Came right up behind him
The kid didn't see him
I never seen that look on another human being

Bats in the belfry (Whooha!)
Rotten on the vine (Hahahaha!)
Can't keep my eyes closed (Whooha!)
Sunny all the time (Haha!)
Put your hands where I can see 'em, boy
Keep 'em up high
This place (this place)
Has gone
Crazy

Mona from Sedona, Arizona
Drove to California in a beat up Toyota
Reading Deepak Chopra
And singing 'Champagne Supernova'

Life, it ain't all roses, though
You go where you're supposed to go
Woke up in a mobile home
Her kidney sold in Tokyo

Jumping out the double-wide
Running through the trailer park
Tearing off the duck tape
Wearing just a pair of socks
Terry-cloth undies that her parents bought
In hysterics when the sheriff stopped
Crying, with her hair in knots
Smelling like Smirnoff
I think the drugs are wearing off

Bats in the belfry (Whooha!)
Rotten on the vine (Hahahaha!)
Can't keep my eyes closed (Whooha!)
Sunny all the time (Haha!)
Put your hands where I can see 'em, boy
Keep 'em up high
This place (this place)
Has gone
Crazy

(It don't matter,)
(Climb that latter)

Whooha!
Daddy's little president
Never found the evidence
Heaven-sent, lemon-scented medicine they fed us with
Said the speech, read it off the teleprompter
Fly away in an army helicopter

Heavy metal concert, in the yellow Mazda
Jello shots and marijuana, going off the wall, now
For a bunch of mobsters, looking for Osama...
(Bin La da da da da da da da)

Bats in the belfry (Whooha!)
Rotten on the vine (Hahahaha!)
Can't keep my eyes closed (Whooha!)
Sunny all the time (Haha!)
Put your hands where I can see 'em, boy
Keep 'em up high
This place (this place)
Has gone
