Even before this song came out, there were people who "shipped" Rufus with Brandon Flowers. You can find online communities dedicated to the fictional relationship. This might have inspired Rufus to write the song as well, but I don't know. |

I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that Rufus said yes, literally it's about Mozart and his little sister. But of course on a grander scale, it's about sexual politics, like others have said. Women have to "use [their] hips as fodder" (i.e. use their physical appearance to their advantage) to get anywhere in the music business. |

Not only is "Grey Gardens" a wonderful documentary, but was made into a beautiful Broadway musical a few years ago. (After this song was written, though.)

No, because it's Provincetown, not Providence. Provincetown is in Cape Cod, which the song is about. Bears are big, hairy gay men and Provincetown is known as being very gay friendly. |
