I saw a video on youtube where Jake Gyllenhaal did the spoken word part of this song at one of his concerts... boy do I wish I was at THAT show!

Rufus Wainwright – Tulsa Lyrics 17 years ago
Even before this song came out, there were people who "shipped" Rufus with Brandon Flowers. You can find online communities dedicated to the fictional relationship. This might have inspired Rufus to write the song as well, but I don't know.

Rufus Wainwright – Little Sister Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that Rufus said yes, literally it's about Mozart and his little sister. But of course on a grander scale, it's about sexual politics, like others have said. Women have to "use [their] hips as fodder" (i.e. use their physical appearance to their advantage) to get anywhere in the music business.

Rufus Wainwright – Grey Gardens Lyrics 17 years ago
Not only is "Grey Gardens" a wonderful documentary, but was made into a beautiful Broadway musical a few years ago. (After this song was written, though.)

Also, just a fun fact to add... Edith "Little Edie" Beale was a first cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

Vampire Weekend – Walcott Lyrics 17 years ago
No, because it's Provincetown, not Providence. Provincetown is in Cape Cod, which the song is about. Bears are big, hairy gay men and Provincetown is known as being very gay friendly.

They are actually referring to Mystic Seaport which is a recreated 19th century seaport village in Mystic, Connecticut.
