Tokio Hotel – On The Edge Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with your point on the "Don't Jump" song. If she feels alone and that no one cares, "Don't Jump" seems to be from the eyes of a friend or family member that is trying to reach her. If it is so literal that is actually IS jumping from a building or something, then the friend/family member could be trying to show her that they do care by by trying to get her to remember the times they had together and how she used to be happy and she still can be and by saying at the end "if all that can't hold you back, then I'll jump for you" shows the ultimate form of love/caring. Both are very powerful songs.

Tokio Hotel – On The Edge Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with all of you that believe it to be about cutting. Having walked that path once in my life, as soon as I heard this song, that was the first thing that came to my mind.

The first verse seems to simply be about her depressed state. It seems she sort of feels like the world and everyone around her will carry on without her if she is not there; everything has become so routine, not much emotion left (they sang her happy birthday yesterday without her); this could obviously all be in her head. She may be longing for more attention (this was part of my problem sometimes) and she feels that by doing this to herself, others will start paying more attention to her. The flying through the night part also hit home for me, because when I used to cut, I always got this sensation that was similar to flying. Obviously it is different for every person, but that's how I took it. Night plays a role in the song. I suspect that is when she cuts. It talks about how "it is getting light outside at the beginning of each verse."

The second verse, to me, is saying that she is so far gone in her depression that even those that care to try and reach out to her, fail. This happened with me as well. It just came to a point where it didn't matter what anyone did, they couldn't get through to me. "Someone's hand is touching her, she has no will," illustrates this point. I have heard that some believe this line to talk about her being raped/molested, but I think that is far to literal. Someone's hand touching her seems to me that there ARE still people in her life that care, though she thinks otherwise. But because her depression is so great, these attempts to reach her are blocked out and go unnoticed by her. "She doesn't care at all, her memories are long gone," is saying that the happy times in her past escape her now. I struggled with this as well. I would try and remember something happy from years back to help control my urge to cut, but after some point, there seemed to be fewer and fewer memories to fall back on.

The third "verse" seems to be talking about her after that certain point where everything she would try to do or anyone else would try to do to help was completely pointless. The cutting became a retreat for her. She eventually became addicted to it and "shut the door, longing for more and more;" essentially it became her happy place. The last part, "everyone is watching, her arms are so sore, but she doesn't care anymore," seems to say that, because she has tuned everyone out so much at this point, she doesn't notice when they start noticing. Now that she is addicted to it and is doing it more often in more places on her arm, people start to notice, but at this point, she doesn't even care that they are noticing now, because she is doing it for a different reason now than when she was at the beginning.

The choruses progress over the song, 2 lines changing. All choruses talk about "the scars will stay forever, side to side with death." The scars from the cutting, if they are deep enough, won't go away (I still have them on my wrists from years ago). The death part, to me, is saying that she IS side to side with death, and if done correctly, she CAN kill herself, she just hasn't yet. I also like someone else's response to this, saying "cutting from side to side." This seems a good meaning to it as well, the blade being death and she going side to side with it. "Darkness and light are blinding her sight, she's not coming back," to me means that she knows what she is doing is bad, but it still feels so good (the darkness and light); she could be confused about cutting at some point (I know I was). "She's not coming back" seems to be foreshadowing the end of the song.

As for the lines in the choruses that change, the first set, "her first time on the edge...a moment that feels better," really hits home. It is saying it is her first time cutting (the edge being the blade) and for that moment, she feels better and her depression my even dissipate for short while. This was true for me. Even though everything was going wrong, that moment of high made me feel tingly and warm and better for a minute. The second chorus lines say "and closer to the edge...this time feels even better," talks about the progression of her cutting. Closer to the edge could mean that she is now cutting deeper, getting closer to actually doing serious damage or even killing herself. This time feels even better for her because it is now growing into a different reason as to why she does it; the more she does it, the better she feels and she begins to long for the high. The third chorus lines say "and fall from the edge...this last time, even better," talks about her last time doing it before she actually ends up committing suicide by it (maybe intentional, maybe not). When I have done it, I have never actually experienced cutting so deeply that the blood accumulates on the blade so much that it drips from it (falling from the edge). But this time because she DID cut so deeply, the blood did fall from the blade. And it seems that the deeper she goes, the better it feels for her. So this last time, being the deepest, feels even better than the previous times.

This ultimately kills her. The last two lines say this for me, "the sky is casting over, her last wish stays unsaid." Two times at the beginning of the song, it talks about how it is getting light outside. I assumed this to be the following morning after she cut the previous night; the world continued to go about its business and the sun was shining like it always does. But after the night she ends up killing herself, the following morning, the sky is casting over because of what happened and her family and friends will soon realize what happened. Not sure what her last wish would be (maybe to be truly loved, maybe to have more attention), needless to say, whatever it is, it went unsaid because she felt like there was no one truly there to hear it in the first place.

It's a very sad song but also gave me comfort to listen to it because I could relate to it so much.
