Completely agree with Alwaysinterested. First stanza: Man goes into the city, makes his way to the same bar that Silvia's in (maybe he's stalking her?). Sees that there's a man staring at Silvia as if his vision is completely absorbed by her ("a man barside/with eclipses for eyes"). Our man, jealous, says that he won't let Silvia get close to this man ("won't let them touch"), going to any lengths possible, foreshadowing his later violent actions ("Did I say too much did I say enough?"). Second stanza: Silvia's probably with the eclipse-man at the bar; our man is jealous, paces around the room ("circle round the room") and starts to lose his self-control ("breaking my will"), realizes that Silvia won't be his here ("know I can't have you here"), sees that Silvia's with another man ("someone else on your skin"). Third stanza: An explanation of their history and an apology for our song's conclusion. They were in a relationship she ended ("so you made it stop"), but he can't forget her ("can't you make it stop"). Silvia can't even understand the depth of his obsession for her ("you don't know silvia"). "and its all my fault for not getting off" means he's apologizing for not getting over her and then ultimately killing her as a result. "daamn" seems pretty self-explanatory. Fourth stanza: "Reach the city steps tonight following the power lines" We follow the power lines to where Silvia and our man are finally secluded... Fifth stanza: He forces himself on her (i.e. rapes) her outside in a dark empty, isolated place ("and your skin is so right underneath the black night"); she can't stand it and asks for him to end it all ("and your voice calls out for the coup de grace"). He kills her ("and the lights go out"). Will her body be found? Will his obsession for her live on? ("will there be a trace?") He doesn't know the answer to that ("I dont know, silvia") or to even how he feels about her... does he realize that she's dead and he's killed her ("that I loved Silvia") or does he, in his delusion, think that she's still alive ("that I love Silvia")? Super creepy and I love this song. Amazing. |

Love this song. Pretty straightforward meaning; even though the speaker can see the future, it's more a curse ("sans joy") than a blessing. People may not believe you; your life has no more spontaneity; there's the agony of being unable to change the future that you see. The allusions are one of my favorite things about the lyrics. "Curse of Cassandra" >> After Apollo granted Cassandra the gift of foresight, she angered him, so he cursed her so that no one would believe her predictions. "Doc's DeLorean" >> a Back to the Future reference, do I even need to explain it? Haha. "Mimir's Well" >> Mimir was a Norse god known for his wisdom, and a drink from his well imbued the drinker with secret knowledge as well. But yeah, basically, everything about this song is awesome. |

It's about a girl who's totally in love with a guy who doesn't feel the same way about her--perhaps only sees her as a very close friend. "I'll win, I'll never give in Our love has got the power Too many lovers in one lifetime Ain't good for you" The guy is interested in multiple other girls, has dated multiple other girls, but is not currently dating our girl. She responds by saying it doesn't matter who else you see, I'll keep on loving you until you love me back. "You treat me like a vision in the night Someone there to stand behind you When your world ain't working right" This girl is obviously a really close friend to the guy--he goes to her when his world is screwed up and he needs someone who understands him, someone who can and will help him out. But as a result he doesn't see her as a love interest but as a support system. "I ain't no vision, I am the girl who loves you inside and out Backwards and forwards with my heart hanging out I love no other way" So she explains to him that she isn't some sort of distant wise man on the mountain to only be consulted, but a girl to be loved. Moreover, she loves him unconditionally, even when it costs her (her loving him makes her vulnerable--her heart's hanging out). "What are we gonna do if we lose that fire" Not sure about this one--maybe she's wondering what their relationship would be like if she stopped loving him so much? Great song, totally on target for this situation. |
