This album seems to be a mixture of a tragic love life juxtaposed with the lives of animals. "Rangers", "Minnow and the Trout" and this song are full of anthropomorphic imagery.
She has also said she was influenced by "Alice in Wonderland" and loves fairy tales in an interview last year. |

At the risk of being flamed here...I've unintentionally been "that guy" and this song has brought me to tears because of it. I fell out of a powerful relationship, a broken mess, into the arms of a friend who had always wanted to be with me. I cared about her but could never have loved her. I was weak though, and I broke a personal rule regarding not sleeping with someone I don't love. Not long after the inevitable end came and I lost that friendship forever, I heard this song and realized how she must feel. |

This song describes something that happens to many lovers. I was with a woman for over two years but we started drifting apart emotionally and I was blind to it. One day she broke it off and I found out later she was talking to someone else a few states away. A few months later we tried to get back together but it was only physical need at that point and she ended up moving away to be with him.
I got over it, though I probably loved her more than anyone before. Whenever I hear this song though, and a few others on this album too, it takes me back to that relationship. I'm in a better place in life now and I wouldn't change things, but memories can be bittersweet at times. |
