i think evilpopsicleguy is spot on. im an atheist, but i think its false to say any chance of any god is completely impossible. all organized religion is a load a shit from my view but an actual god is very unlikely but not impossible. and the family reference i agree with the other people saying its about not raising your kids in some false happiness. my parents were atheists, yet they told me there was a god when i was really young, i think the same thing goes for gabel which is why hes stating hes not gonna do the same to his kids if he has any, but thats just an outside guess. and for the whole "fuck beatles! Against Me are teh bestz" thing, heres the chain of influence:-
Beatles- Crass- Tom Gabel
Penny Rimbaud was influenced mainly by john lennon. and gabel wouldnt have picked up a guitar and started playing those early anarchist songs if it wasnt for his Crass phase. even though i dont like the beatles sound, saying they suck is just really ignorant.

Against Me! write about what they're experiencing in the present, if theyre in basements surrounded by militant DIY kids then of course theyll be singing the good old fuck the system songs, if theyre on MTV of course theyre gonna be singing about how much its shit. i dont get the problem people have, they NEED money, so they have to go on MTV. the only thing that would piss me off is if they were singing anarchist songs to brain dead blond rich white american girls and theyd just sit there like "omg hes so cute" or whatever. i think its great how they sing songs subtly criticizing the mainstream while mtv are promoting it and haven't a fucking a clue what they're promoting. Against Me do what they want and though they love and appreciate their fans and all that, they dont give a flying fuck if you got a problem. |

im pretty sure its about a gay relationship but i think its an unspoken thing. i think gabel had it in his head when he was writing it but never actually brought it forward and said "gay rights ftw" or anything. this is one of my favorite songs of all time. if im in the right mood and i hear this song and i get really into it im almost in tears of joy just hearing it. the reason why i dont think its just an ordinary straight couple who people dont like together is because it simply doesnt make sense. tom gabel doesnt write love songs out of thin air, theyre either really personal to him or have some strings attached and as far as i know gabel has always been real anti homophobic. |
