This song is just pure beauty, and I feel like despite the obvious "Crazy for a boy" bit, I feel like she's not in the relationship at the moment, but she really wants to be in it! Nothing in the lyrics really says it, but the tone of her voice and the style of the song is a little melancholy to be a love ballad. Love love love Adele! |

Really, I feel like this song is about having someone who isn't necessarily leading you on, but instead about someone who you love deeply or really want to be with, but he/she just isn't ready for a relationship or doesn't feel the same, or sends out mixed signals. "And I give in to my pretendings Which forgive you each time Without me knowing They melt my heart to stone" Her pretendings here are "words that I made up," the things she wants to hear, but he may not have meant in that way. "Why do you steal my hand Whenever I’m standing my own ground You build me up, then leave me dead" This is the most powerful part of the song, the bridge, and she really brings home the point here: the guy is taking her entire being away from her when she's just trying to be independent and alone, because he is sending out mixed signals that she just can't piece through, and she just cannot understand why he doesn't feel the same. He builds her up with his sweetness, but in the end he doesn't actually go through with whatever he's been getting at. This is especially made true in the switch last chorus! "I hear your words you made up I say your name like there should be an us I best tidy up my head I’m the only one in love I’m the only one in love" Now he's the one who is actually saying them, but these words are the truth, how he really doesn't want to be with her at the moment. She says his name now like there SHOULD be a them (that's a typo in the lyrics on the cite that I corrected for my lyrics...lol). Then she says she had best stop thinking about it because she realizes she really cannot have him. This song describes my life right now. |
