To me, this song seems like it's about escaping from reality into a dreamworld. The word to describe that is "Escapism," which explains why the song might be called "Escapist." Throughout the song, it seems like the writer is drifting in and out of a fantasy world, traveling from dream to dream, while at the same time "flying" away from reality. Which goes along with the writer's metaphor of being a nightingale. "A nightingale in a golden cage That's me locked inside reality's maze," I think that by this, they mean on the outside they're trapped in a confusing reality that they don't understand or can't get out of. So instead they escape to an imaginary world, where they can be free to do anything they desire, and be anything they want to be. "Journey homeward bound A sound of a dolphin calling Tearing off the mask of man The Tower my sole guide" This could mean that they consider them self to be a dream, trapped in the body of a man. By the lines: "Come someone make my heavy heart light Come undone bring me back to life It all starts with a lullaby" They could mean that they want someone to kill their body or let their body sleep eternally, so that they can truly come to life. If they consider them self to be a dream, killing their body would be the way to set them free from "reality's maze" and the "cage" they feel they're in. "This is who I am Escapist, paradise seeker Farewell now time to fly Out of sight, out of time, away from all lies" This seems like it's referring back to the escapism, where they use a fantasy world to escape from an unpleasant reality. I disagree with the people who say Nightwish's songs seem to be about nothing in particular. All of the songs I've heard by them so far seem to be about certain emotions, being described by metaphors. The metaphors are probably in place to make the song more interesting or to throw off what a person might think the song is about. Their lyrics also paint very vivid images of what they depict to be happening. I think Nightwish has very good lyrics. |
