This song very closely resembles a past relationship of mine. Eerily so, actually. Seeing as we are now on separate sides of the state. I do really miss this person sometimes, even made an effort to talk to them months after the fact. They seemed okay with the idea, asked me to call them and so I did. This simply resulted in my being yelled at for twenty minutes about how I ruined their life. "At least I gave you something to hate." |

This is one of those songs that one hears during a specific time in their lives that seemingly reflects their current situation perfectly. When I first heard the song, I had just been dumped after a long term relationship and was completely devastated. The song lyrics reflected my heart break exactly but the upbeat tempo really made me feel a little better. Of course, I was wallowing in self pity so I refused to believe that at the time, but I realize now that without the countless times listening to the song, I would never have gotten out of my apartment. Recently, I was heartbroken again, one of those horrible incidents in which one falls for a close friend unaware that it's not mutual until they've fallen way too hard. This song popped back up in my playlist. Fantastic song. "Open me up and you will see / I'm a gallery of broken hearts." This line certainly made more sense the second time around because of the sheer and utter devastation my heart had endured in a period of less than six months. |

This is a fantastic song. Of course, I can't be entirely sure what Alanis meant by it, but I do understand what it means to me. First of all, I listened to this song a lot when someone chose to leave me for a younger person. I'm only 21, so you can imagine that by younger, I mean young. The phrase, "Ooh, this could get messy but you don't seem to mind." pretty much sums up my feelings on that. Additionally, this song pretty much perfectly describes the movie "Notes on a Scandal" from Cate Blanchett's character's POV. Think about it. |
