I think this song is so amazingly beautiful because not just the lyrics but even the music captures the quality of being in love. The song is sung slightly out of time, with some phrases coming out longer than other and some shorter and i think it captures the uncertain quality of being in love, how time seems to flow in and out and everything you hear or see is the person you love. My favorite part is "that's the way love is" repeated three times because the timing is really strange, as if to say that love itself is really strange and out of sync and hard and wonderful. My favorite song in the entire world. |

I love this song so much even though I'm not very country and it's a little old-fashioned and hokey with the marriage proposal at the end, because it gives a different ending to the Romeo and Juliet story. This reminds me so much of a relationship I had that I had to keep secret because a friend would be hurt if she found out, so the "we keep quiet cause we're dead if they knew" isn't so much really dead as much as in bigggg trouble. I love "you were Romeo I was a Scarlett Letter" because it suggests that the girl is somehow committing this crime of passion, but then the story ends not terribly like this story actually ends in real life. I think it's cool how the beginning of the resolution happens in the last line of the phrase before the end, "he knelt to the ground...etc" |
