The meaning is transparent enough, great song. The band just soars on this one, the crescendo around 'soleil' is awesome. |

It's a pleading wake up call to the listener. Stop and feel, care about what's going on around you, by the end of the day maybe it'll sink in. It's also a criticism of our culture - we're all about image not the substance, and the greed endemic to our society that feeds off suffering, how we're so apathetic and desensitized that it doesn't seem to matter. He's also lashing out at counter-culture movements that get snapped up and commercialized, and in the end lose their hearts to money. |

A reflection on the attention you get when you're trying to 'make it' in the music industry; be wary is the central message. |

Short tune but it packs a punch.
'bout a guy who's got a tough life and desperately relies on short-term solutions to stave of the inevitable crash'n'burn. He's a hypocrite and a cynic who's steadily giving in to despair, the last two lines say it all... |

This is such a powerful song. Tom Morello's soulful guitar mixing with the gloomy bassline played so well by Tim Commerford, the song undulating between anger and despair, with Zack pulling no punches. One of their best songs, if not the best. This is the kind of honesty missing from many bands these days, say what you feel; if just to get people thinking, get people talking. |

I can't help but feel this song is unfinished, it just sounds unwieldy, and at times Sting seems to be struggling to fit his eloquent lyrics in the short spaces allotted for them.
And yeah, not a Police release... |

Not only a lack of comfort, but a lack of people willing to challenge him I think - what Andy and Stewart used to do back in the day.
Also, there's an irony in here I'd wager most don't know about in this line:
'I don't wanna be no tax exile'
From memory both Andy and Sting went into tax exile in Ireland on advice from their accountant. Stewart didn't have to because he wasn't a British citizen.
Bass line on this track cranks hard, you've gotta admire Sting's skill. |
