OK, sorry.. that was a bit harsh.. I do, however, believe that this album is somewhat about what you refer to as the "pop-culture political issue" of global warming. Not that its about "global warming" specifically, but the album is titled "Modern Guilt" .. The state of the world ain't no Candyland, and a lot of people are too caught up in their own shit to see it or care. I believe an album is meant as a whole, coherent piece. (In the case of actually skilled artists, that is.. these pop-monsters created by the machine, spitting out albums with one or two "SMASH HIT SINGLES" do not factor into my listening theory.) With that said, if you look at the lyrics to other tracks on the album, it all sort of pieces itself together. He feels guilty, but he doesn't know why. Things aren't going well, lots of people are starving, we're running out of clean drinking water all over the world (don't be surprised when WW3 starts over water sources), our glaciers are melting at a far faster rate than any historic period of climate change (it _is_ cyclical, we're just accelerating it), and not to mention how F-ed up this American Empire is becoming, oh and take a look at the American prison system as of late... I don't blame him for feeling guilty, so do I. Although neither he nor I are directly to blame for any of this. It's not a "global warming lecture" (see islanduniverse's comment below), it's a multifaceted fucked-up reality. And it's really quite sad/disturbing. Anyhow, thats just my interpretation... But why else is it called "Modern Guilt" and all the songs come together with this similar concept? |

| Sure the meaning is up for interpretation, that's the beauty of a good lyricist... But certainly Beck was thinking _something_ when he sat down and penned this song. We'll probably never know just what he was thinking, but the point of this SongMeanings website is to try... | |

| You're actually quite right, in both aspects... He does want to escape the "real world" but it's because your "pop-culture" issue of "global warming" (thats only the tip of the iceberg) is actually REAL. And the REAL WORLD can be very scary if you go out and do some research on the current status of things. Especially in our ecosystems (I don't know if you ever took Geography or Biology, but without the natural systems around us, we can't survive). | |

I'm so confused by what these lyrics mean.. What is he saying? I'm getting the vibe that he's gay, and feels like he doesn't fit in because of it.. But from everything I know about this band, he's straight. But lyrics like "should have never chose 'Girlfriend' " and this bit of the 2nd verse: "you follow whose dating who but when it comes to you one is pulled a dozen different ways in the mind" ...and then it immediately goes into "something is not right with me" ... Sounds like he's gay and ashamed of it.. Any thoughts? |
