Adding to what "laurelin" wrote, "This is only a game" appears in Lolita as an entry in Humbert's diary after having seduced Lolita (anotehr one of Manson's phoning it in moments, Humbert first has sex with Lolita at 6am. The trees in the courtyard Are painted in blood So I’ve heard She hangs the headless Upside down to drain In Invitation to a Beheading Cincinnatus C. is to be beheaded in a courtyard which he knows of but has never seen himself explaining the "so I've heard". The hanging upside down to drain may be inspired by this from Nabokov's Information to a Transformation "the butterfly creeps out -- and in its turn hangs down from the twig to dry." But maybe not. There are some unlisted lyrics in the bridge to the song - Manson's whispering when reversed says "I hear voices in my head" and below this is a chopped verse at the end of which the following can made out: Some people expect Sometimes it's hard to see I expected myself to but I -- didn't think It's an execution. |

| Marilyn Manson – You and Me and the Devil Makes 3 Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I’m just like rolling a stone up A hill in the Hades Sisyphus was condemned in Greek mythology to rolling a stone up a hill in the Hades for all eternity as punishment for his deceitful acts on Earth in Greek mythology. - Hell-flavored, I've got my mood poisoning You must be something that I hate Almost verbatim from the film Wild Palms: Harry Wyckoff: You have a flu? Eli: Small case of mood poisoning. Must be something I hate. - “If we get in bed someone will fall in love / you and me and the devil makes 3” are lines Manson wrote down on hotel notepaper and the starting point for the song. The devil, he told Jodowrsky, is essentially his dark side. In O Brother Where Art Thou the sirens sing “you and me and the devil makes 3” to lure men.” - Watch out your face, my sperm’s cold as ice A reference to the old Christian myth of the Medieval times of how the Devil was said to have cold sperm particularly the witchcraft confession of Slyviane de la Plaine (1616), alleged to have had sex with the Devil, who wrote “The devil’s member was like that of a stallion and when it penetrated it was as cold as ice, as was his sperm.” In the film Brother Of Sleep, one character says “they say that the devil has cold sperm”. |

| Marilyn Manson – Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides the Hand) Lyrics | 17 years ago |

She reminds me of the one in school when I was cutting she was dressed in white and I couldn't take my eyes off her but that's not what I took off that night And she'll never cover up what we did with a dress no she said "kiss me, it'll heal but it won't forget" In the first verse he sings of a girl in school whose dress he bled on which resulted in her demanding payment of one kiss for the blood on the dress. - And I don't mind you keeping me on pins and needles If I could stick to you and you could stick me too Pins and Needles is a saying (EMDM uses a few sayings such as ‘beyond the pale’ and the ‘grass is greener [on the other side]’) for waiting in anticipation. The ‘sticking’ (a colloquialism for stabbing) reference could be going back to the butcher’s knife and the refrain could be from Evan’s point of view. She reminds of the one I knew that cut up the negatives of my life In an argument an ex-girlfriend (not Dita) took a box of photos of Manson – promotional pics, rare pics etc. – and cut them up with a pair of scissors thus she ‘cut up the negatives’ of his life. The parenthesis title of When The Heart Guides The Hand was on the front of a plaque Manson saw in a funeral home during 2006. |

| Marilyn Manson – They Said That Hell's Not Hot Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Manson self-references brining to mind Count To Six And Die’s “some do it fast / some do it better in small amounts” during the final game of Russian roulette. The sound turned off is a reference to how having been burgled as a child Manson sleeps with the TV on: “Since I can remember I’ve always had to sleep with the television on, because when I was a kid somebody broke into my house so my mom always kept the television on to keep me from being afraid of the dark. After I was married, because her (Dita) career took on a new identity and her schedule and my schedule became opposite, we had problems. I was put in a position where I wasn’t living up to as much love and dedication as she expected me to because I wasn’t changing my schedule for her. I was expected to sleep with the TV turned off because it was bothersome.” “Depression's something that people would probably assume I've always had an element of it in me. But I didn't have any feeling - it's a void. I wasn't afraid, I didn't have fear and I didn't care. I just gave up all hope. I realised that I didn’t like being me and because been expected to change,” he says, caused him to “lose his identity” he is said to be fading slowly into the void. “They said that hell's not hot” is possibly another self-reference (a lyrical technique Manson has been a large proponent of since 2000) to Great Big White World’s “and hell was so cold…” though it may simply be referring to how cold Manson made the house with the air conditioning lol. |

| Marilyn Manson – Putting Holes in Happiness Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The chorus largely consists of lines pre-existing the album. The chorus bears a striking resemblance to a passage from a March 2004 journal entry announcing the release of Lest We Forget (the best of): “At least our death wishes will come true. We don't even need to blow out the candles. I hear that thunder, I hear it too. It's all my goddamn Frankensteins coming back for some sick closure.” The line ‘you taste like valentine’s’ is what Manson claims he said to ERW after he kissed her for the first time. Lastly in B&C just before they are killed Bonnie & Clyde take a photograph and Manson has said this inspired the lyric. Manson wrote an essay in 2003 with the title Putting Holes Into Happiness. In the bible the patriarch Adam is tempted by a snake to leave the Garden of Eden. Notably the Devil or Dita in the next song was allegedly loyal to Adam in attempting to trick him into damnation. Thus if Manson is tempted away by Evan then they run away to Hell (in interviews Manson has said Evan is someone to “hold hands with on the walk through hell”.) |

| Marilyn Manson – If I Was Your Vampire Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Initially but not on the album version the opening lines were preceded by ‘just before Christmas / and I’m going to kill myself or you’. Manson had during this time sequestered himself in a large empty mansion where he was recording. The embrace in question is most likely not that of Evan (who was the only other person with him) but that of the butcher knife as after what Manson called ‘the first time I’d enjoyed myself all year’ on Christmas Eve (it involved hash brownies) he became very depressed. 6am is when, he says, he got the phone call that convinced him his marriage was over. Manson was apparently going to kill himself but Evan took the knife and told him not to do it, saying "If you want to live, then I don't want to live". The song is Manson's death-wish fantasy, where he and Evan plunge off a cliff like in the HSG video. The lines "Beyond the pale, everything is black, no turning back" recall Kinderfeld's "Because today is black, because there is no turning back". On a very literal level it’s where the relationship with Dita ends and the new one with Evan was born. The moon is significant in its historical usage of signifying change as Manson revealed to Jodorowsky. Re: the ashes reference Vampire’s were said in mythology to literally eat ashes. By the same accord consuming the ashes of a burned Vampire was said to cure an illness bought on by the Vampire. |
