The New Pornographers – Failsafe Lyrics 16 years ago
The speaker sounds trapped in a relationship. It seems this individuals is looking for an opportunity to leave his / her partner when the opportune moment arises. Failsafe could be the instance where the individual identifies reasoning to say both parties are to blame. Thus, the individual feels justified when the failsafe activity occurs to say he / she is not leaving for selfish reasons alone.

Failsafe, then, is a “justified” opportunity / excuse to escape...in this case justified on the imposed presumption of mutual failure.

Andrew Bird – Anonanimal Lyrics 16 years ago
It sounds like he is uneasy about becoming a spectacle for fleeting amusements, yet that's what he's bound for...almost by design.

Cat Power – The Greatest Lyrics 17 years ago
The song does draw parallels to Muhammad Ali and the pursuit to become "The Greatest" at one's given trade.

I interpret the "flood" as a harsh reality the world brings to her...which could in fact be truth. If you wish to rise to the top, you're going to be bombarded with criticism, and it only gets harsher the higher you get. A humbling reality sets in.

The unbridled truth strikes her down until all she can do is accept it. She's melted down into a hunk of armor, guarding what's left of her tainted and damaged ego.

At this point, she may even be taunting her critics. She understands the game. Her ignornace has been stripped away, so what more can they do?

Chan was born in Georgia, thus "culprit south" may draw on the idea that the world is going to put her back in her place...back to where she belongs. It's been decided that she's not the greatest. She's been fortunate to make some progress to the top, but now the awakening occurs. It was too lofty of an ambition to endure.

Now that the dream is wiped out, it doesn't mean the cycle ends. "Truth" has revealed that one is not worthy of being the greatest, hence the ground is laid for another optimistic soul, perhaps even her own once again, to climb the pursuit to the top. Note that her desire to be pinned in, though, may indicate that this is a life lesson she, personally, is unwilling to forget and re-live. Alternatively, she may just be saying she understands how pop culture works.

The "later parade" may refer to the idea that "The Greatest" come and go. They are marveled and celebrated at a point in time, but soon they are forgotten and replaced by another. If this is the case, there really is no such thing as "The Greatest."

I love this song.
