| Metallica – Fade To Black Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This song is about the despair of living a meaningless life that is always moving closer to ending in death. | |
| Mötley Crüe – Shout At The Devil Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| The little devil on your shoulder tells you to do something bad because it will be fun but you have to shout at him no. | |
| Guns N' Roses – Coma Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This song is about how, after attempting suicide, Axl realizes that he wants to live. In a stress-induced panic, Axl gulped down a bunch of pills and thus slipped into a coma-like state in which he couldn't feel any pain is still semi-conscious. Many of the lyrics reflect the deep thought that he has while in this semi-conscious state. While he doesn't feel any pain or frustration anymore, and likes that non-feeling, his deepest desire for a meaningful emerges, all while medical professionals are trying to revive him. Once he realizes that he wants to live, he suddenly awakens and realizes that, if he is going to live a meaningful life, it's going to take some time to heal his wounded self and who he though he was. Ultimately, it's about hope and accepting personal responsibly for one's own happiness. | |
| Guns N' Roses – Right Next Door To Hell Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song is about the consequences of fame, particulary concerning a specific incident Axl had with his neighbor, and the stress it causes. Basically, Axl is saying that he and the other guys in the band were young and naive before they were famous. They thought it would be all fun and games, only to realize the loss of pricacy and public scrutinty that it brought. He touches upon the reasons he wanted fame and how all his heros went through the same thing. Many of songs on Use Your Illusion touch upon the themes of the loss of innocence and dissillusionment. | |
| Guns N' Roses – Coma Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song is about when Axl attempted suicide by ingesting a bunch of pills, which put him in a coma. He wanted to die because his life, he believed, became too stressful. While comatose, he felt nothing, or very little, and was semi-conscious of it and like it. But something inside him pushed for life. The will of live pulled him out of the coma and he began reflecting on his life and how some bad choices lead him down a bad path. At the end he realizes that it will take a lot of time and effort to overcome his damaging past. Now he must be more aware his choices so he can make better ones. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – The Perfect Drug Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song, like most NIN songs, are about how Trent lost his self after the dissolution of a romantic break-up. In fact, the entire Downward Spiral album is a story about that. After Piggy dumps him, he begins to unravel into a suicidial depression. The mast majority of Trents music up until With Teeth is about his feeling bad about himself and his life after losing a certain girl. My guess is her name is Annie, mentioned in The Becoming. Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Donward Spiral, The Fragile are all about "poor me. My girlfreind dump me and, without a reason to be good, I do bad things and hate myself for it." With Teeth deals more with more universal themes and addiction while Year Zero is about governments and the world, as opposed to Trent and his problems. This song, I think, is more about some other girl that he wants to have sex with to escape his longing for his ex, which for him is like a drug--addciting and pleasurable at first but only makes him feel even worse in the long-term. Great song. | |
| How To Destroy Angels – The Space In Between Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song is about the perils of fame and how the public and fans want to see you fail and maybe even killed, even if just in a metaphorical sense. The famous person wants fame to fill the inner void or "space in between" but it all backfires. The song references how celebrities try to control their image, and it also make some alluisons to Jesus and how the same thing happend to him--the mob wanted him crucified. These themes re-occur throughtout Reznor's work. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Echoplex Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This song is about how Trent's true self is trapped inside his image as being the famous Nine Inch Nails singer. His true self, he is saying, has become irrelevant because people only see him as the persona others, and himself, have projected onto him. His inner thoughts aren't expressed outwardly but just bounce inside the walls of his own head. His inner self begins to see and understand what he has become via fame. The "they" in the phrase "just like they said" are all the people who determined who Trent was by simply saying that's what he was, inducing others to believe it. This song, in many ways, is like Eminem's The Way I am--"I am whatever you say I am. At the end of the song he proclaims that nobody can hurt him and take away his true self if he keeps it all inside. | |
| How To Destroy Angels – A Drowning Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| The locusts represent all of life's little problems. A swarm of them means there are so many little problems that, collectively, it's too much. Imagine being outdoors and one bug is nagging you. It's annoying but it's not a big deal. Now imagine being covered with a tons of bugs that keep crawling all over you and biting you. It would induce insanity. | |
| How To Destroy Angels – A Drowning Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
This song is about someone who is losing hope because they are in the process of breaking up with a romantic partner. She is "drowning" by focusing on the past as the future keeps coming. She's begging the other person to save her because she knows she can't save herself. The "tiny window" above her is that glimmer of hope that is moving further away from her as she sinks. In short, the song says "please save me by not leaving me." The lyrics aren't great but the song is--the vocals included. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Heresy Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is the "chapter" in the story where the character rejects any and all authority figures by rejecting the "supreme" authority of God and, from there, begins to view the world as a bad place and people as all people as "evil." In the song he also debunks God and religion, particularly christianity, by explaing the psychological reasons why people believe in God. After rejecting God, the character begins to use drugs to escape the harshness of life that he is now aware of. At the end of this song, he begins to hate himself, which is signified by the fact that he thinks that, if there was a God and that did punish bad people by sending them to hell, he would be one of those people. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – March of the Pigs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is about people and their natural inclination towards greed. In plot line of the album, this is where the character begins to hate humanity. First, he was rejected by Piggy. Then, he lost faith in the establishment--"God is dead." Now, he thinks he sees all people for what they are--selfish, greedy pigs. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – In This Twilight Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is about a person's final reflection in the moment before the world is destroyed by nuclear war. Looking back on his life, he thinks about what he would have done different if he had the chance. He wished he had been a better person but now it's too late to change. The message: don't waste your life and think before you act. Also, I think this some of Trent's best vocal work. Great song on a great album. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – The Fragile Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is about a man who knows a woman who was naive like he was before he became disillusioned with everything. He wants to protect her from what he has suffered through. But he realizes that he was to let her experience life for herself, even if it means letting her experience some bad things. | |
| Guns N' Roses – There Was A Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This I Love, Your interpretation makes sense, and I too have heard of such stories, but how do you know that is what he is references in this song? Did you read something or did you put it all together yourself? |

| Guns N' Roses – Shackler's Revenge Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I don't have a link. Axl said it in one of his online chats with the fans. It should be online somewhere. |
|
| Guns N' Roses – Oh My God Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about societal oppression and the effects it can have on an individual. People are taught to suppress their emotions and thoughts in order to maintain the status quo, which never works, not to mention it causes people to suffer and causes them to rebel. In short, it's about the constant struggle between the individual and society. | |
| Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about Kurt's decision to commit suicide. The "she" that he refers to is his feminine side. Kurt Cobain always had it in his head that he would rise to fame and then kill himself. I'm not saying it was his plan but more of a foresight and a self-fulfilling prophecy. The guy hated himself. Here, he finally decides that the answer to the age old question of to be or not to be is not to be. Too bad too. | |
| Pearl Jam – Hail, Hail Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about Vedder's divorce from his first wife. | |
| Pearl Jam – Go Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I'm not sure what this song is about but it does seem like it is about his car or truck. Kind of strange and very funny that such an emotional song would be about that. Then again, I understand the frustration and anger of having to deal with a piece of shit car. | |
| Pearl Jam – Corduroy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This songs is about the pitfalls of fame and how it can deceive a person into believing that becoming famous will make you happy and free you from whatever it is you feel is confining you. Here, I think he felt trapped by his lack of money. Basically, he wanted to become famous because he thought it would make less lonely and rick, two things he thought would make him happy. Instead, he became famous and the fame made him more lonely and the money became a more money more problems scenario. Now he he has to deal with the temptations of giving into what he knows will cause him harm: fortune and fame. | |
| Guns N' Roses – Prostitute Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is a message to an ex-girlfriend in which he lets her know that her never meant any harm and that he has made a good faith effort to become a better person and that he was always sincere and also to caution her to be careful who she associates with and to not let fear and greed undermine love. | |
| Metallica – For Whom The Bell Tolls Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is about war and how often the soilders who are fightinh are doing so for territorial reasons that that they are not fully aware of and how what is morally right depends on one's perspective and it that is the winning of the war that truly determines rigthteousness. The song also expresses the view that the men who fight are tested by a war that strips away all belief systems and leaves each soilder with only his own natural instinct for self preservation and how all the fighting blinds then to the cause they were oringinally fighitng for and how wars continue throughout the ages, leaving the dead behind. |
|
| U2 – One Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about forgiving one's father in the broadest sense of the word "father." My God why have you forsaken me? | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Head Like a Hole Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about resisting one's own greed for money and thus denying its power to control one's life. Many people's lives are controlled by the desire to accumulate more and more money until they become a slave to it's allure. Many Nine Nails song are ultimately about powerlessness of the self--the internal desires that often bring destruction and unhappiness into one's life. | |
| Better Than Ezra – Pull Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about being attracted to someone you feel is attracted to you too. | |
| Guns N' Roses – Sorry Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is definitely about Slash. | |
| Guns N' Roses – Shackler's Revenge Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Axl said this song is about all the school shootings and how Guns N' Roses was partly blamed for influencing one of the shooters because he (Virgina Tech shooter) had written a play entitled "Mr. Brownstone." The first half of the song is in the voice of the shooter, while the second half is Axl's own comments. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Ruiner Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I'm not sure what this song means, but here's my guess. I think it's about denial, and how the lies people tell themselves become so big and powerful that they eventually ruin their lives. More specifically, it's about someone who finally confronts his own lies and comes to realize the truth about himself and all the damage his own lies have caused him. The ruiner is that part of us that lies to ourselves, that keeps us in denial about who we are and what we do to ourselves and others. |

| Nine Inch Nails – I Do Not Want This Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is about being stuck in a depressive state and the desire to break out of it and to become one with the world and everyone in it. The character feels that his true self has been oppressed, if not fully destroyed, and usurped by the will of others. The line "I am made of clay" reveals that he feels he lacks a definite sense self, which means others can mold him into what they want him to be. To make matters worse, his depressive state is isolating because he thinks he's the only one who feels the way he does. The character is continually making the same mistakes over and over again and thus feels stuck in an endless series of failures and disappointments until it all seems hopeless. He feels empty and is drowning in his own self pity and misery. However, there is a glimpse of hope. He is reaching out to someone who he thinks could save him from his misery if that other person could understand him. He doesn't want to be depressed anymore. Then things get worse. The character begins staying in bed all day, fantasizing about all the different lives he could live if he weren't stuck in bed being depressed all day, which only makes it worse. Now resentment creeps in and the character is becoming angry because he is stating to believe that there really isn't anything real, that everything is just in people's minds and he doesn't want to hear false sentiments that others care about him. Seems like he's yelling at an ex-lover when she tells him that she still cares about him, or he's yelling a psychiatrist who is telling him the same thing. His yelling is probably not actual but him imagining himself yelling at whoever he is angry with, playing it all out in his imagination. People start giving him the old "I know what you're going through, I know how you feel" bit and this really makes him angry because the thinks other people have no idea how bad he really feels. Finally he wants to feel connected with other people that he will do anything to achieve that goal. He wants to experience all of life's options and experiences and want to feel at one with everyone via sex. He wants his life to have mattered to other people. is a hint that he feels his personality is nothing more than what he has been taught to be. |

| Nevermore – The Sanity Assassin Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about weak minded people whose will and imagination are taken over by some other entity like the government or religion. Basically, people who can't think for themselves will have someone else do the thinking for them and thus will live "someone else's life." | |
| Nevermore – The Sanity Assassin Lyrics | 17 years ago |

| Metallica – Sanitarium Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
In short, this song is about a sane but wild man who becomes violent when society labels him insane takes away his freedom by confining him in an asylum. In the asylum, doctors tell him that he is crazy, he is conditoned to believe that the outside world is dangerous, the staff use violence to control him, and his life becomes and oppresive and endless routine, all of which would makes any sane person crazy. His oppressed state causes him to constantly fantasize about freedom until his dreams become so powerful that he begins to act according to them and thus revolts against the asylum's staff, using violence and even murder to get out of there alive, becuase the fear of living on in the asylum is too terrible to think about anymore. The irony of the song is that he goes crazy in a place where is suppose be made sane. Welcome to where time stands still No one leaves and no one will Moon is full, never seems to change Just labeled mentally deranged Dream the same thing every night I see our freedom in my sight No locked doors, no windows barred No things to make my brain seem scarred Sleep, my friend, and you will see That dream is my reality They keep me locked up in this cage Can't they see it's why my brain says “rage” Sanitarium, leave me be Sanitarium, just leave me alone Build my fear of what's out there Cannot breathe the open air Whisper things into my brain Assuring me that I'm insane They think our heads are in their hands But violent use brings violent plans Keep him tied, it makes him well He's getting better, can't you tell? No more can they keep us in Listen, damn it, we will win They see it right, they see it well But they think this saves us from our hell Sanitarium, leave me be Sanitarium, just leave me alone Sanitarium Just leave me alone Fear of living on Natives getting restless now Mutiny in the air Got some death to do Mirror stares back hard kill is such a friendly word seems the only way for reaching out again |
