This song is about questioning God's intentions and his power. Depeche Mode were touring Eastern Europe and Asia at the time and Martin Gore saw a lot of poverty and hard things. Similar to what we see each day on the news in regards to Africa & Afghanistan... he probably saw that first hand. If you haven't noticed, a lot of Depeche Mode's songs are about challenging God's relationship with Man. |

This song is about Dave Gahan's relationship with God. Martin Gore is a genius might I add and he is basically talking about Dave Gahan's point of view and the pain that he's going through. Basically, this song was made during Dave's rehab sessions and Martin is writing from Dave's point of view about why God left him alive... about why he is the "chosen one". Dave Gahan is the subject of this song and he is questioning why God would choose him when he is a tortured mess. In a way, Dave is challenging God to give him answers about why his life is what it is... and all the decisions he has made in his past has not brought him peace. This song is very powerful... |

This song is definitely about divorce. "The pain that he's used to" is about emotional pain that him and his wife were going through. "I don't believe all the dreams you conceive" He is basically telling his ex-wife that you are making up a lot of bullshit and probably have too much time on your hands, she probably accused him of cheating. "You just need to achieve something that rings true." He is telling his ex-wife that she needs to accomplish something in her life that is worth-while to keep herself busy and fulfilled. Everything else in the song are simple lines related to this theme. If you have ever watched the Kubrick movie called "Eyes Wide Shut" starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman... be sure to watch the bedroom scene where Nicole is accusing him of sleeping with his patients... this song is exactly about those feelings. |

This song is very straight forward. You don't have to be a genius to know what's going on here. He is basically in a love/hate relationship with some girl and she's trying to take the relationship to the next level but he doesn't want to feel attached to her. In some way, he is telling the girl that they need to keep their relationship as it is and let things go slow because if they rush things and become too attached then the relationship will "crumble". This song has very simple lyrics... but it's a very good song. |

This song is about prostitution in Germany or Eastern Europe... somewhere in Europe. Martin Gore was living in Germany at the time and he probably fell in love with a young girl who was suffering from poverty and was about to venture off into prostitution in order to earn money. So basically, he is telling the girl that he wants to get to her first before she loses her innocence and becomes like the rest. "Before They Do"... That is talking about pimps or people who pay money for sex... Prostitution is still prevalent among the youth in Eastern Europe & Russia. All you have to do is go visit Germany, Holland, or Dubai to figure that out. So it's no surprise that Martin Gore saw it first hand and wanted to write about "saving" these girls. "It's Just A Question of Time" before you lose your innocence like the rest of your peers do. |

This song is about a trip on ACID. Watch their videos... you will understand. "Control yourself, Take only what you need from it." If you have ever taken ACID before, then you have heard those lines before. It's about controlling yourself while tripping and taking only the good things from it. Because if you have a bad session, then you will really trip out... so basically these lines are telling you to calm the fuck down and enjoy the trip. The other lyrics to this song is definitely about child-hood. As far as the meaning of the other lyrics, I think these guys don't write songs as a WHOLE but instead write stanzas that have different meanings. Over-all, an ACID trip is similar to your childhood and how you are careless and filled with imaginations. |
