Taylor Swift – Teardrops on My Guitar Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is the story of my life. i have this one friend i've been totally in love with for the past like year, & he has no idea. he started dating my best friend really recently (i hadn't even told her i liked him), & he talks about her all the time: how gorgeous she is, how thoughtful and considerate she is, how smart she is, etc. i play the guitar & whenever i play this song i start to cry, so the "teardrops on my guitar" part even applies to me. he's so amazing & perfect for me, but he'll never know, and i think that he and my friend are going to last a while.
if only she knew...

Avril Lavigne – I'm With You Lyrics 16 years ago
I love Avril & this song! This is probably my favorite song by her. I miss her Let Go & Under My Skin stuff. I feel like The Best Damn Thing was just a huge & total betrayal, because she left behind good and actually meaningful pop/rock for meaningless, generic bubblegum pop.
Anyway, there's actually a story behind this song that explains why this song means so much to me.
So about a year ago, my long-estranged best friend told me she couldn't be friends with me anymore, because her new "popular" friends didn't like me. I was really, really upset, because we had been friends forever, and I couldn't stand to see it end like this. After I begged & asked her for an explanation, she told me to meet her at the bridge near our houses that night, and we would talk about it (the bridge had been our "spot" ever since we were little, the place we spent every summer by, so I thought going there would bring back memories of our old friendship and we could actually work this out.) So I went to the bridge, just like she said, and I waited there for an hour, and she never showed up. It was pitch-dark and freezing, and after an hour and a half, I just went home and had this song on repeat for the rest of the night. This song explained exactly how I felt, especially the first verse.

Michelle Branch – I'll Always Be Right There Lyrics 16 years ago
I read somewhere that she wrote this song with her best friend, Jennifer Hagio or something. They were in the music room of their high school, and Michelle just started playing the piano, and together they wrote this song in like 15 minutes.
So yeah, just a little anecdote, but I thought it was a really cute story.

The lyrics are kind of generic to be honest, but she wrote it for fun with her best friend at 14 or something, so it's not like she's going to try to write the next #1 song in America.
And if you listen to some of her other songs like "Goodbye To You", which she wrote at 15 (by herself), you can tell she's an amazing songwriter, even if it doesn't show in this song.

I can relate this song to me going to high school next year. I start only about 4 months from now, and I know that these last few months with my friends are our last few months in "paradise," before we go to high school and everything gets difficult and complicated.

Avril Lavigne – Unwanted Lyrics 16 years ago
To me it's about her friends, or maybe even a guy she likes.
With her friends, it could be that they're shutting her out and not inviting her to go places with them, and they ignore her and she has no idea why.
With her boyfriend, it could be that he's stopped calling and she feels like he doesn't want to date her anymore. In both of these situations, she's saying that her friends and her boyfriend don't really know her at all and they have no right to ignore her like they are.

Katy Perry – Thinking of You Lyrics 16 years ago
ohh my God this song is too amazing! To me it's about a guy she was dating who she was really in love with, and then he broke up with her, but she's still in love with him. She's now dating this other guy but she doesn't love him, and whenever she's with her new boyfriend, she's thinking of her ex, and how much she wishes she was still with him.
I love the last verse:
Oh won't you walk through
And bust in the door
And take me away
Oh no more mistakes
'Cause in your eyes I'd like to stay

It's so sad but so beautiful at the same time. Katy is an amazing lyricist.

Vanessa Carlton – She Floats Lyrics 16 years ago
Really beautiful song. The meaning is kind of scary and sudden, but it's also deep and sophisticated. Not that suicide is anything to be taken lightly, but it's a really hard subject to write a song about, and I think Vanessa handled it beautifully.

I like sunshinekitty's interpretation better, though. I think I'll go with that as the meaning.

Tim McGraw – Can't Tell Me Nothin' Lyrics 16 years ago
I absolutely looove this song!!
I heard about it through Taylor Swift's song "Tim McGraw." There's a line, "When you think Tim McGraw/ I hope you think my favorite song/The one we danced to all night long." It turns out that song is this one. It's a great song, I think about ignoring what everyone else tells you to do and doing what you know is best for yourself, just being happy being who you are. It's not much of a song to slow dance to, though...

Michelle Branch – Goodbye to You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think she wrote this about a guy she was dating before she got signed and became a huge star. He was the only thing she wasn't willing to give up to do be "famous", but she knew that if she wanted to follow her dreams she would have to let him go (you were the one I loved/the one thing that I tried to hold onto.)
It's a really sad song, but the message is that sometimes we have to sacrifice something that means a lot to us for something we know will make us happier in the long run.

Taylor Swift – The Outside Lyrics 16 years ago
She wrote this song when she was like 12, I think, which only makes her that much more amazing. When she was 13, though, she actually did get ditched by this group of popular girls, so eventually she was in the "in" crowd, but she wrote this song before that. 4 years after they ditched her, Taylor played a hometown show after her first album was out and she was a huge star, and they all showed up wearing her t-shirts and asking her to sign their copies of her CD. I bet they wished they hadn't ditched her now, haha.

Anyway, I think it's about a girl who's tired of feeling rejected by this guy who's obviously never going to love her back. But she's still hoping that he'll love her back, so she's not completely giving up hope yet.

Taylor Swift – Fifteen Lyrics 16 years ago
This is such a sweet song. Well, it's bittersweet, because of what happened to her friend Abigail, but it's hopeful too. I think the message is something like, "Freshman year was hard, but I know things can only get better from here."

I can kind of relate to it. I'm actually in 8th grade now, but I've always wanted that life-changing, fun and exciting, but also kind of huge and scary, freshman year. Guess I'll have to wait til next year to find out what high school holds for me. Hahah.

Taylor Swift – Cold as You Lyrics 16 years ago
This song reminds me so much of my ex-best friend. She was such a bitch to me all the time, but I stood there supporting her and making excuses for her when other girls called her on her bitchiness. Seriously, for like 3 years all did was listen to her cry about her boyfriend and her friends and her family and her entire life and I told her over and over everything was going to be okay. But she would always tell me how much she never trusted me even though I was pretty much her only friend who hadn't deserted her. Then a few weeks ago we just got in this huge fight and she said the nastiest things and then I was just like, "That's it, I'm not doing this anymore. Find someone else to cry to, but don't call me the next time your boyfriend dumps you." Well what do you know,a few days later I get a call from her, and she's like breaking down sobbing asking me to come back to her. I'm just like, "Uhh, no. You're all out of chances. Sorry." I don't think I'd ever been anywhere colder than her, haha

Taylor Swift – You're Not Sorry Lyrics 17 years ago
You ARE right, there are plenty of songs out there that have nothing to do with love, but most of the songs you mentioned have to with depressing and unappealing topics like suicide and war, topics that you might say are "sophisticated" and "mature", but most people who aren't as musically cultured as you may be probably aren't attracted to depressing songs like those.
And really, what most people care about is love. Love, heartbreak, unrequited love, the whole lot of it is what most people look for in music, because it's such an enormous part of the world, and it always has been and always will be. Then there are people like you who are "anti-contemporary" or "anti-mainstream" and automatically hate all popular artists, like Taylor Swift, without even giving their music a chance. I'll admit that most artists popular today really aren't that good (Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, etc) but unlike all the over produced and marketed people in the Disney empire, Taylor writes her own music, doesn't use synthesizers or try to market herself as a specific person; Avril Lavigne the rebel (I'm actually a huge Avril Lavigne fan, but her image as an artist really is a "rebel"), Miley Cyrus the Tennessee cowgirl, Selena Gomez the Latina princess, etc. She's just a girl with a guitar who writes her music, puts it out there, waits and sees how people react to it. She has gotten a reputation for writing about her ex-boyfriends, but that came from people actually listening to and criticizing her music, not because they saw a picture of her in a magazine and decided that she was pretty and therefore a good artist, like with Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez or whoever. And the reaction to Taylor Swift has been far better critically and publicly than the reaction to anyone in the Disney empire. Know why? It's because she actually has TALENT and cares about her work and cares about her fans and how people perceive her both as an artist and a person. She's an actual musician, and that's why so many people are raving about her.
So we can continue this conversation forever and I don't think I'll ever change your point of view on T-Swift, but I love her and her music, and so do 4 million other heartbroken girls all over the world. Like I said before, music is music, and if songs about suicide, war, and how much people hate their government make you happy, then that's what you should listen to. Songs about love and heartbreak make me happy, so that's what I'll listen to.

Taylor Swift – You're Not Sorry Lyrics 17 years ago
Girls don't make heartbreak "overdramatic". Boys are just too afraid of damaging their reputation of being "manly" by talking too much about how a girl broke his heart. Girls talk about heartbreak for what it is: totally and complete hell for weeks. You may think that's an exaggeration, but if you really think about it; being in an amazing relationship with someone who you thought loved you and who you definitely loved back, the one real constant in your life, and then all the sudden you wake up one day to find that they've moved on. It's horrible, and Taylor Swift is definitely one of the people who was unlucky enough to have her heart broken multiple times, which comes out in her songs. And if so many girls you know can write songs like "White Horse", "Tim McGraw", "The Way I Loved You", and "Our Song", as well as play an instrument, be as poised and yet laidback in interviews as Taylor is, AND is ridiculously gorgeous, then I'd like to know why they aren't famous as well. I'll admit that "You're Not Sorry" isn't one of her best, but if you listen to some of her other songs, you might change your mind. Keep in mind that Taylor not only writes the lyrics, but the music as well, with some occasional help from a co-writer, but I'll bet you even George Winston (whoever he is...) has co-writers. And love and heartbreak isn't the ONLY think she writes about, it's just what she MAINLY writes about. She also has a song called "Breathe" about a friend who wasn't a friend, a song "The Best Day" about her family, "The Outside" about not fitting in at school, and "Mary's Song" about a couple that lives next door to her parents. Doesn't every artist have a subject they mainly write about? I'm also very uncultured when it comes to music, I'll admit; I mostly listen to contemporary music and I hate classic rock. But music is music and what kind of music you like is a really personal thing. So that's why I don't put down other peoples' tastes in music, because I know that they have their own interests and experiences that led them to like what they like. And as for the "always dating bad boys" generalization, I think that's unfair, just like it's unfair for girls to label all boys as "heartbreakers". I've dated a few really nice guys who always called me back when they said they would, picked me up on time, were friendly and sweet, but for some reason I just couldn't get past the fact that I didn't seem to have all that much fun when we were together. There was no passion, no spontaneity to our relationship. And then I've dated other guys that were funny, sweet, picked me up on time, called me back, AND would surprise me after school with roses, randomly show up at my house on a rainy Saturday morning, and helped me cram for my Spanish exam all together. It's not that nice guys aren't good boyfriends, it's just they aren't FUN boyfriends. Think about it: would you rather date a nice, sweet, faithful girl or a nice, faithful, fun girl? I didn't ignore the fact that you supposedly knew about songs that weren't about love, but you didn't mention any specific songs, so I just didn't say anything. Give me the name and artist of a song that's NOT about love.

Taylor Swift – You're Not Sorry Lyrics 17 years ago
Simplistic and immature? Funny. But don't go and assume that I'M some naive 15 year old who cares nothing about school or family or friends and only about boys because I'm not. I care a lot about my education, and my family and friends but heartbreak is just something that comes with being a teenager. Hell, it comes with being human. And I listen to all different types of music, from Taylor Swift to Fall Out Boy. I've just gotten hooked on Taylor Swift recently because a few of my friends were listening to her, so I decided I might give her music a try and I loved it. And as a girl, I don't shunt ALL boys into the "sucky" category. I've known a lot of really nice guys who just weren't right for me compatibility wise. But I've also known a lot of man-whore guys who have "screw 'em and leave 'em" attitude to dating girls, and that's a lot of what Taylor Swift writes about. I know girls break hearts too, and I have a brother so I've seen a lot of his bitchy girlfriends and how harshly they dump him. Her fan base has nothing to do with her voice, it has everything to do with her lyrics. The reason she's so popular is because so many people can relate to what she writes about, and her voice (which isn't flawless as I've said before, but is still pretty great) just comes with her music. She also has an amazing band, so that's part of the reason critics rave about her. And about your comment about "Fifteen", my point was that almost EVERY girl does something she's not proud of at that age, be it getting into drugs or alcohol or dating a guy a lot older than you and him breaking your heart, and yet you still go back to him, etc, and instead of repeating the mistakes she made at 15, Taylor learned from them and is trying to move on from the things she's guilty about.
So she's mature, sophisticated, and an amazing lyricist for a 19 year old. That's basically why she's popular. You can argue with me, but that's what I have to say.

Taylor Swift – You're Not Sorry Lyrics 17 years ago
She's actually REALLY talented. Ask professional reviewers from The New York Times, Boston Globe, Time, etc. Her voice has room for improvement, but so does EVERY artist's voice. But she only turned 19 like 2 months ago, and her lyrics are wise WAY beyond 19. Just listen to her song "Fifteen." She's looking back on four years ago and wishing she knew then what she knows now. Most 19 year olds are still getting drunk and having sex like they were at 15, but Taylor looks back on her mistakes and tries to warn other girls of the dangers that come with being 15 and in love. And so what if she writes mostly about boys? Because she's NINETEEN. She's had her fair share of heartbreak and she writes about what she knows and what she goes through. Plus, Taylor's main fan base (me) are going through heartbreaks of their own and it's pretty damn helpful to have a song you can relate to and know that you're not alone in what you're going through. Besides, it's COUNTRY and 99% of country music is about heartbreak. And because boys DO suck, and once you get your heartbroken it's hard to make it whole again. Every song is a love song, or about something related to love. I'd like you to find me one song that has absolutely nothing to do with love.
Bottom line, her lyrics are mature and wise beyond her years, and even though her voice isn't anything spectacular, it's pretty fucking great, and if she's this talented at 19, imagine how talented she'll be in 10 years.
And I have to point out one more thing: If you don't like her music, why'd you look up her lyrics?

Does anyone else think this song is about Sam, the guy she wrote "Should've Said No" about?
Maybe he kept calling her apologizing for cheating on her, and then he kept doing it again, and finally she just had to be like, "No, you're NOT sorry for cheating on me. You keep doing it again and I'm not believing you this time."

I love this song, it relates to me really well.

ok THE REAL LYRICS ARE:
All this time I've been wasting hoping you would come around
I've been giving out chances every time
And all you do is let me down
And it's taken me this long baby, but I've figured you out
And you're thinking we'll be fine again but not this time around

You don't have to call anymore
I won't pick up the phone
This is the last straw
Don't wanna hurt anymore
And you can tell me that you're sorry but I don't believe you baby like I did before
You're not sorry
no, no, no, no

Lookin so innocent I might believe you if I didn't know
Could've loved you all my life if you hadn't left me waiting in the cold
And you've got your share of secrets and I'm tired of being last to know
And you're asking me to listen 'cause it's worked each time before

But you don't have to call anymore
This is the last straw
Don't wanna hurt anymore
And you can tell me that you're sorry but I don't believe you baby like I did before
You're not sorry; no, no, no
You're not sorry; no, no, no

You had me crawling for you honey and it never would've gone away, no
You used to shine so bright but I watched all of it fade
So you don't have to call anymore
I won't pick up the phone
This is the last straw
There's nothing left to beg for
So you can tell me that you're sorry but I don't believe you baby like I did before
You're not sorry; no, no, no
You're not sorry; no, no, no

No, no, no, no (x4)

I think this is definitely about a friend not a boyfriend.
Her songs about break-ups are normally a lot angrier than this one (Picture To Burn, Forever & Always).
It really describes how I felt after losing my ex-best friend. Even though I know I'm 10 million times better off without her, it still hurt because we were really good friends.

This is one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs. I love how some of her break up songs are really sad and heartfelt but this one has a really "It was good while it lasted, but it didn't so fuck you" kind of vibe to it. She does an amazing job with writing songs about break-ups that really hurt to the core, and break-ups with guys you wish you had just never wasted your time with in the first place. I think alf0509 had a really good and thorough interpretation, but I don't think this song is about God anywhere past the first verse. I think it's another song about a relationship (not necessarily with a girlfriend, maybe with a best friend/parent/sibling)that went horribly wrong and then suddenly the person who abandoned him decided to show up in his life, and already he's a mess and all he can do is ask the person, "Where were you?"
There's actually a pretty amazing story about this song. My best friend's father abandoned her when she was a little kid, he never tried to contact her at all, he was never in her life and then all the sudden two years ago he just called her and decided he wanted to be in her life again. She was hesitant at first to let him back in, because she was really mad at him for never being in her life, and he kept asking what he'd done to make her so angry at him. She was like, "ARE YOU KIDDING?" She actually sent this song to him in an email, and after he listened to it he was like, "I get it, I'm so sorry." They're getting to know each other again, but I don't think she can ever forgive him for abandoning her.

Anyway, I love this song, it's amazing:)

I know I've commented before, but I'm just sitting here listening to the song and remembering my Summer 2007. This entire song describes the end of that summer and everything in between for me. Ohhh God, I'm trying not to cry, but listening to this brings back so many memories...especially the line "some September". September really did change everything for me that year (September '07).
And the end, "Say you'll miss me one last time, and I'll be strong."
Anyway, as for song interpretation...
At the end of the song, I can hear him say, "I pulled the plug because I didn't want to look for a a light switch." Like, he was tired of fighting with her so he just ended it all instead of looking for a way to fix it. So, he's "finally numb" and doesn't want to be rescued, or do the easy thing by going back to her.

I'm sorry, I know this was lot of repeats from my last comment, but I was just sitting here listening to it and trying not to cry, it just brings back Summer '07 like I was sitting there by the pool I practically spent my whole summer by.

Omg amazing song, I love it.
I think it's about a girl who was really in love with a guy, and maybe they were good friends, but he never knew she liked him that way. Then he did something to betray her trust, maybe told her he loved her and then hooked up with another girl, and now she realizes that he never was her "prince" and she's not a princess.
Especially the part:
And there you are on your knees
Begging for forgiveness
Begging for me
Just like I always wanted
But I'm so sorry

He's begging for her to forgive him, he's begging for her, just like she always wanted him to, but she's not going to forgive him, because it's too late for him and his "white horse" to come and catch her.

It's definitely NOT about drugs.
It's obviously about a girl who's sick of her entire life, and she just wants someone--a real friend, a boyfriend, whoever--to take her away and let her escape.
Hence the lines:
Where should we go, I don't even care
Anywhere is good enough
Hook me up

If it was about drugs, they would be going to a specific place to get the drugs, not "anywhere".

I think it's about a girl and her guy friend, probably overall best friend, who end up "together" and they're confused about what happened. Especially the line, "Please don't drive me home tonight, 'cause I don't wanna feel alone." She doesn't want him to drive her home after what they did, because she thinks she'll feel confused and alone if she's by herself. She's especially confused because she was so emotionally close to him, and after being so physically close to him, she's wondering what she should feel.
