Argh, that's so true, and I HATE it! I saw him perform yesterday and I SWEAR he pointed right at me when he sang "But the one shining out so bright is the one right where you are". He also waved at me. Twice. Even though I was sitting 19 rows back. But then again, I was taller than most of the people there, it was light outside, I was over-dressed for the occasion, and I was wearing thick black wrist band/glove things, so I was kind of easy to notice.
But, he probably waved at 10,000 other girls. |

I'm assuming he wrote the lyrics? If that's the case, I think this is a religious song. I'm a mormon like David, and this sounds a lot like a talk one would hear in church or something the missionaries would say to an investigator. The only difference is there is no mention of God as the "peace to your soul". So IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, so please don't get offended if I say this, it sounds like he is speaking to the people who aren't members of the church who feel lost and without hope. It's his little way of doing missionary work. But he can't mention God, Christ, or the church in the song because some people get mad when people do that sort of thing. |

I don't think this song is so much about live-fast-die-young as it is about not wanting to grow up. We get to an age where we realize we have to stop being kids and start being adults and it scares us. Life is so simple when we are young because we are free to dream, play, explore and pretend but when you become an adult the real world starts and happiness ends. Family and childhood friends go their separate ways, you have to get a boring job that you hate, you have to get married and start a family, and you have responsibilities you didn't have before. So the solution for some people is to pretend that life is still as easy as it was when they were kids. And that leads to "the end". |

I like the Sarah McLachlan version better too. I like how this song is about any relationship. It can be about a lover or a friend or a family member or anything. |

I think this song is so sad. Even though it's about a toy who's just discovered he's a toy and not a super hero, it can also be applied to anyone who's lost their confidence or can't accomplish their dreams for whatever reason. |
