| The abandoned cars and their flattened tires choking the roadways, the tape decks producing only silence, the watches ticking down an artificial and arbitrary conception of time, the tennis balls waiting for the air to slowly drain out of them, the books in foreign languages hiding in bookstores or boxes in the basements, all serve as constant reminders of the essential and inescapable pointlessness of man’s material creations. Even Kate’s DIY-refashioning of certain objects for uses removed from their original purpose (the burning of painting frames and planks from an abandoned house for warmth, the transferring of water with a “jar” instead of a “pitcher”, the donning of the over-sized soccer jersey as a full-length garment) adds an ironic twist to Kate’s belief that “the work itself lasts” (139). | |
