Tokyo Police Club – Centennial Lyrics 16 years ago
i'm not exactly clear on what this song means, but obviously he's refferring to someone who is blind ("the letters are unread, she's heard it on cassette" "she's got books on tape"). it seems to me that this is possibly a childhood friend with whom he had a close relationship, and possibly there was an accident that caused her blindness. possibly, "this coming thursday evening is our centennial" refers to an anniversary of when they met or became friends or began their romance, who knows... i don't know what the significance of "centennial" could be, or most of the other things such as "passenger still" and "parading on the rooftops"

without a doubt, this song is about his daughter, but the lyrics are directed towards his wife, Nina. there are several deep anologies, such as "filled the innocence doe eyes with glue" "the boyish voice is leaving" etc, but their meanings aren't completely necessary to see what the song is about. clearly "so begins our odyssey" refers to a new chapter in his and his wife's life, becoming parents. it is the beginning of a journey, parenthood. the general idea of the song is that kevin barnes (the writer) is growing up. "you're my only softness, you're my only pleasure, it's true, and i never want to be your little friend, the abject failure" he is saying to his wife that she means so much to him and he wants badly to be a good father, and he knows if he screws it up, he'll be nothing but an "abject failure" so, despite his passed follies, he wants to redeem himself by being a good father. the chrysalis refers to him evolving as a person, and the "super ego is waking" refers to the moral and mature part of the brain. he is saying that he's taking a new step in his life, and is finally growing up. "gloomy petrarch" i assume refers to his cynical or dark attitude of his songs. again, he calls her his "mousy aesthete" and "bouyant cherub" which is a reference to how much he means to her. the song is not so much about alabee, his daughter, but rather his relationship with his wife.
