This song is about a truck driver who is stranded in a snow drift while away from his wife. The truck is loaded with bananas. That is the hidden meaning.

The Wallflowers – One Headlight Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on Dec. 7th 1941. "One Headlight" was a popular phrase at the time that meant that even though something is broken, that it won't stop the progress.

So long ago, I don't remember when
That's when they say I lost my only friend

--the loss of the white picket fence America that it characterized in old film

Well they said she died easy of a broken heart disease
As I listened through the cemetery trees
I seen the sun comin' up at the funeral at dawn

--signifies Japan's emblem of the rising sun as planes approached from the west

The long broken arm of human law
Now it always seemed such a waste
She always had a pretty face
So I wondered how she hung around this place

--this directly talks about the attack and how America had somehow stayed out of the war

Hey, come on try a little
Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
In the middle

--this is the rally cry for America's citizens to stand up and realize that they can win the war

But me & Cinderella
We put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight

--America reclaiming her dominance and despite the attack, continuing to fight the war

I won't go into any further details since you should be able to read the lyrics as they were truly meant and get the understanding from the perspective of the nation and World War II. It is obvious when you really listen to the song.
