I think this song covers the futility of chasing dreams in your life and in your relationships. Examples from the song. "forever waiting for disaster" - Just a mindset I think a lot of peple are familar with. I definitely am. "What David calls servant and master Will you play it too?" - My guess is that this is a reference to the Depeche Mode song MASTER AND SERVANT. David Gahan is the lead singer and the primary lyric is "Lets play master and servant, it's a lot like life." which fits with the theme of disillusionment. "As this displacement begs for water Swimming, bathing Drowning in sorrow." Scream with me." - His feelings of, perhaps even desire for, isolation and detachment are like hungers needing to be fed, but its like feeding a pain. Scream with me; join in the pain. "I crawl across this cracked expansion I'll be buried, soon. Beneath the sand with pure intentions. Wanting something, someone to follow" - Crawling around the universe described as a cracked expansion... perhaps indicating devoid of meaning. Life is terminal and he'll be dead soon, perhaps he is already emotionally dead having chased this life with the purest of intentions looking for someonelse with pure intentions to be with or to follow, maybe both... "For a change, I'll refrain From hiding all of me from you" - Classic line of a repressed personality coming clean and vulnerable "Here's my lullaby Pray for rain, lose your name And watch all your dreams fall through." - I absolutely love this lyric. It's as if he is speaking to a woman getting married, perhaps a woman he loves. Pray for rain - it brings good luck. Change your name - self explanatory, and watch all your dreams fall through. This last part is awesome because it plays with what you would typically expect to fit there which would be "and watch all your dreams come true." but Davey is saying this here, this moment you have waited your whole life for, you dreamed about, will actually be the death of the dream you have been chasing your entire life. Not the fulfillment Great Great song. |

Very good song that can almost come across as mocking to his fanbase who might take the "sleepyhead" lyric as affectionate and the allusions to endless summers as romantic. Its an environmentalist song for sure. Possibly I am either giving Dave too much credit or his fanbase too little. Admittedly not a fan of Dave Matthews and his choppy lyrics but I am impressed by the new album. |

| I totally agree. that earlier version with the "I got a feeling, I'm going to be let down" outro was phenomenal. Unfortunately my hard drive has since crashed and I've lost that version... A shame I lost it and a shame they cut the outro for the album cut. | |
