I understand the above interpretation, but I personally like to not delve too deep into this one. I think it makes a beautiful lullaby to a child, containing all those gentle admonitions about going to sleep and not wandering the house at night. I especially love the last line; it makes me think of toys magically sneaking back into a child's room after they're fallen asleep. |

This is just a brilliant song. I find it especially applicable at this time of year, since it reminds me of going home for the holidays, perhaps to a home that is not exactly as you'd like it to be. References to the end of autumn, car trips and a carpet being laid out (a home being prepared) support this, I think. Maybe I'm putting a bit too much of myself into it, but it specifically reminds me of a child coming home from college; perhaps a quiet person who plans to spend their holidays reading and trying to have a good time- make memories worth repeating. However, when they get home they find themselves making a list of things they'd like to forget (which ironically makes them dwell on these things more, of course). Anyway, just a really fantastic song. |
