| Hehe i just realized that Ancient of Days has some really dated guitar effects so "Youth of 1000 Summers" should be nothing to worry about. :) | |

Some of Van's songs that are explicitly about Jesus are the most energetic I feel like. I just feel like running so fast that my skin falls off after listening to this song. Interestingly enough that's an effect that C.S. Lewis discusses at the end of "The Last Battle." If you like this one, and you think you can handle some (almost corny) keyboards, then listen to "Youth of 1000 Summers." I find it very hard to describe my own Christianity, but these songs capture it just about perfectly. |

This song is taken almost verbatim from the book of Acts. I really like it. This is one of the few on Widow City that Matt sings in. I really like the way that the lines become ambiguous in this song. Specifically look at, waiting for the promise of her father ("Whereof you heard of me"). In the past John baptized with water; now, with wine. But don't weep, he'll Make sure: See how "in the past can either be attached to the first or second line and still make sense. |

| When I saw them live, Eleanor rounded the "o" from "this years champion dwarf MarigOld" just like in the studio album. it is SO unbelievably seductive. lol | |

| This is one of the most humorous and at the same time authentic songs I have heard. I think its one of the songs that really shows their abilities to convey complex emotions. There is despair, vindiction, and humor here. Great song after a long day. Too short though. | |

The biblical references are unavoidable. The mentioning of "pig-byproducts" is what seals the deal. Paul was originally an ultra conservative Jew. I was wondering if "getting stoned" referred to Stephan who was stoned and is considered the first Christian martyr. Paul was present at his stoning, but it didn't occur on the strait street. I just don't know what the REASON for the biblical reference is. Also, much of the song "Pricked in the Heart" off Widow City is taken verbatim from Acts. Anyone want to get a discussion going there? |
