The Felice Brothers – Don't Wake The Scarecrow Lyrics 16 years ago
Haunting isn't it? And so tragic that they talk of starting again but she can't pull herself away from the profession that pays for her habit.

I would suggest that rather than "Simon", he sings "silent, I think I might stay hear with Scarecrow tonight".

Silent seems more appropriate as it won't wake Scarecrow.

These guys, and I suspect Ian felice inparticular, write some awesome lyrics. Listen closely to Frankies Gun and a seemingly fun song becomes much darker. I've put my interpretation on this site, it really is extremely clever.

The Felice Brothers – Frankie's Gun Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think it's about Frank Nitti specifically, it's about a guy travelling with him on the drug or booze runs.

The guy is obviously creaming money off the top of the payments being made to him and Frankie hence

"don't count the thirty in the glove box buddy"

and

"in the dresser, there's ten or twenty dollars but etc"

The guy is taking a bit for himself here and there and I think it's fair to assume that Capone or Frankie found out and "bang, bang, bang went Frankie's gun" he delivered their kind of justice.

Whether they sing "mama" or "baby" is irrelevant, the important thing is that he "hid a little rock". Hid is the operative word because once again he's been taking from Capone.

Very clever lyrics I reckon.

Okkervil River – Lost Coastlines Lyrics 17 years ago
.....and after about a million listens, neither do I.

This is the first Okkervil River song I ever heard and having now heard more, I'm not convinced the meaning is as deep as I originally thought. In fact, I think it's pretty straight forward.

I think it's about a guy who has been press-ganged into joining a pirate or mercenary ship and is telling us about the journey and the haphazard leadership.

As I said previously, it doesn't really matter what it means, it's a genuinely great song regardless in my opinion.

Have to admit that the rest of album was very disappointing in comparison:-(

I suspect JoeF is right about this (although in an incredibly smug and arrogant manner it has to be said).

Just a couple of thoughts to add:

What if Lost Coastlines refers more specifically to the unsuccessful search for Weapons of Mass Destruction In Iraq?

Then - "We sail out on orders from him but we find the maps he sent to us don't mention lost coastlines" - relates to those who were sent by Bush and Blair on a wild goose chase.

Maybe I'm reading to much into it but that would be clever songwriting in my humble opinion.

Not being American, I'm not sure how much influence or authority (if any) Condeleeza Rice had in the decision to send weapons inspectors but if she did play an important role then could she be our "marionette".

And, when we've finished serving and volleying semantics, it's a great song and it's a big universe so I rather suspect it doesn;t matter:-)
