Bad Religion – Turn on the Light Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know if I agree with the smoking idea although there are some verses that strongly suggest it. What throws this theory off though is the;

i'll construct a rack of tempered beams and trusses
and equip it with a million tiny suns
i'll install upon the room of my compartment
and place tinfoil on my floor and on my walls.

I can't think of anything to support the smoking idea with these lines. He's gonna make a million cigarette smoking machine? hehe.

I think that LifeFadingAway is somewhat right. I don't know about hope but I think of it more as something to stand for. Whether that gives you hope or a reason to live is up to the individual. I think the last verse is just the realization that he's going to be so bright, stand for something and do it right.

At the same time he is stating that his ecstatic "self sacrifice" to the cause is either pointless because this provocation of wanting hope is a result of "Questions that besiege us in life are testament of our helplessness." The fact that we as humans sometimes tend to want to always find a higher truth is our "incorrigible delight".

Bad Religion – You Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm going to have to agree with the heaven theory and add my two cents.

For me, this song is about the struggle to fight off those religious beliefs instilled upon people as they are growing up. I personally grew up in a christian family and was -painted- many things. As I grew and starting reasoning and questioning "my" beliefs, it was hard for me to shed some of them just because of the fact that up to that moment I have never questioned any of it so it was the only "truth" I knew. I think this also explains the I wont forget it part. We are not born with religious beliefs so yes we are -soiled- with them. Embracing them is the choice of the individual but the fact that it was planted was not.

I think the whole writing letter and path not found and hate that you could send part is just about the imposed religions reaction to our awakening. The condemnation they send our way for going off the path.

The rest of the song I won't comment on cause I agree with the whole heaven thing that many have said before.

This is what the song means to me on a personal note and I am constantly amazed at Greg's ability to not only write intelligent lyrics but the dynamic impact it has on people on different levels. Thanks for reading.
