Eric Stanton Origin of My Name Peer Tutoring December 7, 2008 Eric My name is Eric Stanton, and in this brief article, I am going to explore the meaning and origin of my first name. Pronounced air-ick, this name is a male name that derived from the name Eiríkr. Eiríkr is a name in the language of Old Norse, once used by the Scandinavian people. The manner in which my name is spelled is actually a French variation of the name, and is interpreted as “eternal ruler”. My mother gave me this name on September 21, 1990. Her reason for her picking my name is undistinguished, so I formed my own theory of how it came about. I imagine she was in the hospital watching television, while waiting for me to be born. She was watching a repeat episode of Chips, specifically the episode when Erik Estrada flips off his motorcycle and gets hurt; episode 402-Sick Leave. Half way through the episode, my mom went into labor. She was administered an epidural, and a few hours later, I was born. With Erik Estrada’s horrific motorcycle accident being somewhat fresh in her mind, as well as the highly potent pain killer influencing her decision making skills, my Mom decided to name me Erik after Ponch from Chips. She quickly realized after making this decision that since I am not of Latin decent, it would be wrong to spell my name the same way as Erik Estrada, so she quickly changed the “k” to a “c”. This correction made the name Eric. This is the most plausible explanation to my name. |
